    • A raster output scanner data controller reads pixels of an image from an image memory and outputs serially pixel data streams to a raster output scanner. The data controller includes an image memory storing a plurality of pixel data blocks in a scan line order, an image memory controller coupled to the image memory, a plurality of first-in, first-out memories coupled to the image memory controller for storing pixel data blocks corresponding to a plurality of beams, and an image controller coupled to the plurality of first-in, first-out memories. The pixel data blocks are transferred from the image memory to the plurality of first-in, first-out memories. The image controller reads the pixel data blocks from the plurality of first-in, first-out memories, converts the pixel data blocks read from the plurality of first-in, first-out memories into a plurality of pixel data streams and outputs the plurality of pixel data streams to the raster output scanner.

    • The present invention provides a means and method for efficiently and automatically monitoring and adjusting the power output of either a single or a dual beam laser diode array used to provide the scanning beams in a ROS system. Collimated light outputs from a collimator lens assembly following either a single or dual beam laser are reflected along an optical path to impinge on one or two photodiodes positioned so as to intercept the reflected light. The photodiode output is proportional to the power output of the laser diode associated with the photodiode. In one multi-beam embodiment, polarization of the laser diode output is controlled so as to ensure that only outputs from an associated laser diode is sensed by an associated photodiode. In another embodiment, a half wave plate is used to rotate the polarization of one of the laser diodes.

    • The present invention presents an apparatus and method for efficiently and automatically monitoring and adjusting the power output of laser diodes used to provide the scanning beams in a ROS system. Light radiated from the back facet of the laser diode is directed onto at least a pair of back facet photodiodes. The photodiode outputs are proportional to the power output of the laser diode associated with the photodiode. The polarization of the laser diode back facet output is controlled so as to ensure that the only outputs from an associated laser diode is sensed by an associated photodiode. In one embodiment, a half wave plate is used to rotate the polarization of one of the laser diodes and in another embodiment optical fibers efficiently transmit light emitted from the back facets to the photodiode.

    • A method and apparatus is presented for registering a plurality of color images formed on a photoconductive member in a process direction. The registration is enabled by a feedback loop wherein the phase and frequency of start-of-scan signals and a stable reference output signal are compared to produce an error signal representing frequency differences between the rotating polygons associated with each Raster Output Scanner. In one embodiment, the stable reference frequency is generated as a digital value by a microcontroller. In another embodiment, the digital value to be compared with the start-of-scan signal is generated by an encoder which provides a signal representing the motion of the moving photoconductive member. With either reference frequency, an error signal is generated which is applied as a pulse width modulated signal to the polygon drive motors to change the speed and frequency of the associated rotating polygon and, the speed, in turn, changing the SOS signals to complete the feedback loop. The process is iterative with pulse width modulated correction signals being applied until the comparison of the digital values representing the reference frequency and the SOS signals is reduced to zero. In a third embodiment, a phase correction circuit is described to enable subpixel registration.
