    • A conveyor for a printing press of the type employing a pair of spaced-apart roller chains guided for movement about an endless path having straight and curved portions. Carried by the chains in spaced positions are gripper frames each including first and second parallel crossbars carrying grippers and pads respectively, with mounting members at the ends of the crossbars. Adjacent pedestals are provided at the inner surfaces of each of the chains with each of the pedestals being secured to adjacent pairs of the pins in the chains. Each pedestal carries an inwardly facing mounting pin. Registering outwardly facing openings are provided in each of the mounting members for receiving the pins on the adjacent pedestals. One of such openings is snugly fitted to its pin to provide limited rocking movement of the mounting member. The other of such openings is widened to provide limited freedom of lateral movement of its pin in the direction of chain movement thereby to accommodate the change in center-to-center distance which occurs as the chains move between the straight and curved portions of their path.

    • A delivery arrangement including a conveyor and take-off mechanism for delivering a series of printed sheets onto a pile in which nozzles are provided distributed along the width of a sheet, for directing a jet of air to the underside in a direction opposite the sheet movement. A guide plate spaced under the sheet and extending upstream from the nozzles serves to confine the jet. Formed on the surface of the guide plate are a plurality of upraised islands, spaced from one another over the area of the guide plate, the islands presenting plateau surfaces at approximately the same elevation above the guide plate. Consequently, when a sheet is sucked downwardly by the jet of air it engages the plateau surfaces in light frictional engagement to apply frictional drag to the body of the sheet. The source of pressurized air for the nozzles includes means for automatically varying the pressure, and hence the frictional drag, in accordance with the speed of the press. In a preferred embodiment the plateau surfaces, which are spaced both laterally and longitudinally of the guide plate, occupy less than half of the total area of the guide plate and at least a portion of the guide plate is formed with a gradual curvature in a direction downwardly away from the sheet.

A logarithmic amplifier is used having an attenuator, coupled to the switch, for affecting the light level to compensate for differences in inherent opacity of the differently colored inks thereby to enable the indicator to respond directly in terms of film thickness regardless of color.

    • A device for registering of sheets, received in an underlapped stream, upon a feed table. The feed table has a retractable front stop and a side guide defining a condition of accurate register for the sheet. Cooperating with the side guide is a wiping mechanism which includes a lower wiping member and a cooperating upper wiping member for engaging a sheet between them for wiping the same into laterally registered position. A pre-gripper grips the leading edge of a registered leading sheet for transporting it forwardly and upwardly to a receiving cylinder thereby forming a wedged-shaped gap above the following sheet. Upon formation of the gap the upper wiping member is momentarily inserted into the gap in active wiping position, with the result that the following sheet is fully registered while it is still partially covered by the leading sheet. The front stop is mounted for swinging movement and so arranged that upon moving to active position it engages the underside of the leading sheet at a point spaced above the table thereby insuring the presence of a well-defined gap for entry by the upper wiping member. In one embodiment of the invention the upper wiping member is mounted upon a rotatable arm for moving the member quickly into and out of the gap while providing a limited amount of dwell in wiping position. In a second embodiment the upper wiping member is mounted upon an arm which reciprocates inwardly and outwardly of the gap.

    • A device for removing curling tendency in sheets, particularly sheets fed to printing presses, in which the sheets are conveyed over two beam-like supporting members arranged transversely with respect to the direction of sheet movement and presenting supporting surfaces which are spaced parallel to one another on one side of the sheet to define a groove in between them. Suction is applied within the groove to draw a passing sheet downwardly into the groove to produce a relatively sharp concave bend in the sheet thereby to counteract the curling tendency. The cross-sectional profile of the groove is variable by a movable member to vary the profile of the groove and hence the degree of sharpness of the bend, thereby permitting the degree of correction to be varied while keeping the suction substantially constant. The device, in both preferred and alternate embodiments, has provision for removing curling tendency in opposite directions.

    • A sheet positioning mechanism for the feed table of a sheet-fed printing press which includes a set of releasable front stops and a side guide, with a wiper adjacent the side guide, the wiper having a limited zone of action. The sheets are fed in a straight stream, in shingled relation, along the feed table, the stream being laterally spaced from the side guide and out of the zone of action. A pair of swingable suckers are provided near the front end of the table and laterally spaced below the sheet path, the suckers being swung forwardly in unison about an arcuate path synchronized with the arrival of the sheet to be positioned so that such sheet is transported both forwardly in the direction of the front stops and laterally from its position in the stream into the zone of action of the wiper so that the wiper acts exclusively on the sheet to be positioned without interference by the overlapped closely following sheet. The wiper acts sufficiently early and is preferably sufficiently rapid so that the sheet is moved against the side guide just prior to engagement of the sheet with the front stops.

    • An inking system for a printing plate having a printing density which varies arbitrarily from the leading end of the plate to the trailing end including a source of ink film, rollers arranged in series between the source and the plate cylinder, the last roller in the series being a form roller in contact with the plate, with at least one of the rollers being a vibrated roller. Thrusting means are provided for imparting reciprocating movement to the vibrated roller. Means are provided for establishing a succession of sources of control signal at different levels tailored to the printing density of the plate at corresponding points about the periphery. A reference member coupled to the plate cylinder commutates the sources to produce a phased control signal which varies with ink need about the periphery of the plate. The control signal is utilized to vary the instantaneous velocity of the thrusting means inversely with the printing density of the plate so that ink is deposited on successive peripheral portions of the plate in a thickness tailored to need. In a preferred form of the invention a control board is used to set up the succession of sources of control signal visually corresponding to the profile of printing density, and hence ink need, at successive peripheral portions of the plate. The vibrated roller is preferably interposed between the source of ink and the form roller, but in a modified form of the invention the form roller itself is vibrated with variation in instantaneous velocity.

    • A sheet intercept mechanism for temporarily retaining sheets released by the take-off grippers above a delivery pile at the output of a sheet fed printing press. The mechanism includes a horizontal support member and a clamping member normally in open position but having means for closing to capture the edge of a dropped sheet. A horizontal actuator coupled to the support member advances it to a sheet receiving position above the edge of the pile. Triggering means are provided coupled to the take-off grippers for closing the clamping member phased with the release of a sheet so that the clamping member clamps the dropped sheet preventing it, and any subsequently dropped sheet, from dropping upon the pile so as to permit the pile to be removed and a new pile board inserted. The triggering means is disabled as long as the horizontal support is in its retracted position and enabled only when the support is in sheet receiving position. Means are included for energizing the actuator for return of the support into its retracted position accompanied by stripping of the retained sheets so that they are free to drop upon the inserted pile board and for opening the clamping member in readiness for a new retention cycle.

    • A device for measuring pressure between two cylinders of a press which includes a first mirror fixed to the end of a journal of one of the cylinders in a position perpendicular to the cylinder axis and a relatively stationary second mirror spaced substantially parallel to the first mirror. A light emitter at one edge of the mirrors, and lying in the common plane of the cylinders, directs a concentrated beam of light between the mirrors at a shallow angle of incidence for multiple reflection, with the point of exit of the beam at the other edge of the mirrors shifting in accordance with changes in the angular position of the first mirror as a result of slight bowing of the cylinder in response to changes in applied pressure. A photocell at the region of exit receives the beam to produce an output signal which varies in accordance with the shift in the point of exit of the beam to constitute a measure of the applied pressure. In one of the embodiments of the invention a relatively broad beam is used, with the output of the photocell varying in response to the degree of overlap of the beam with the photocell. In another embodiment of the invention a narrow beam is employed to produce an output signal which varies in accordance with the position of the beam within the field of the photocell. Preferably the light emitter, mirror, and photocell are secured to a common mount which is rockable about the cylinder axis for alignment of the optical path with the common plane of the cooperating cylinders.
