    • An adaptive contrast enhancement (ACE) method and apparatus provide a natural enhancement in accordance with the time-varying characteristics of a video sequence. Characteristics of a time varying video sequence are specified and a nonlinear transform over the input video sequence is performed to enhance mainly the contrast of the input. A probability density function (PDF) of a time varying input video sequence is computed and then some predetermined video parameters relating to contrast is extracted from the PDF. Based upon the extracted video parameters, a nonlinear transform function is then constructed and updated as a look up table (LUT), which is synchronized with the associated video picture or field SYNC signal. The transform LUT is then applied to the input video to provide an enhanced video output signal.

    • An image processing system for implementing a variant of Retinex algorithm based on local illumination correction is provided to improve an intensity value of each position of an input image. The image processing system provides the ability to distinguish details when compressing dynamic range of a given image. Specifically, first the illumination of the image is estimated by performing a weighted low pass filter (WLPF) operation, and the original image is separated into the illumination and the reflectance images. Next, the estimated illumination is modified by using a non-linear mapping function based on local illumination at each pixel location. Then, the modified illumination image is combined with the reflectance image. Finally, an enhanced image is obtained after a contrast correction procedure.

    • An improved temporal noise reduction method and system detects the global motion and adjusts the overall gain of the temporal filtering. Temporal noise reduction is applied to two video frames, wherein one video frame is the current input noisy frame, and the other video frame is a previous filtered frame stored in memory. In this method, noise estimation is first performed to estimate the noise variance/standard deviation in the input video sequence. Then, motion estimation is applied to obtain the motion vectors indicating relative motion between the pixels in the current noisy frame and the corresponding pixels in the previous noise-reduced frame. From such motion vectors, global motion estimation is applied to estimate the camera motion of the video sequence. If reliable global motion is obtained, the overall gain of the temporal filtering is reduced by adjusting the estimated noise level. Motion blur is thus prevented.

    • A method for reliability estimation of temporal noise estimation in a sequence of video frames. The temporal local differences from a difference between a previous frame and a next frame in the sequence of frames is determined. A distribution of the temporal local difference is determined. Characteristics values of the distribution are determined. The characteristics values are compared to the thresholds to obtain an indication of the reliability of the temporal noise estimation. If the estimated noise variance is determined as not reliable, it will be discarded and the previous estimated reliable noise variance will be used instead indicating the noise level of the current frame.

    • A suppression method that provides adaptive (i.e., selective) processing of an input picture to generate an enhanced output picture with ringing-like areas of the input picture suppressed. For each such window in the input picture, if the window is detected as around a ringing-like area in the picture, then the output pixel for the position of the window comprises the low-pass filtered (i.e., smoothed) pixel in the input picture. However, if the window is not detected as around a ringing-like area (i.e., the window is around a non-ringing-like area) then the output pixel for the position of the window comprises essentially the unchanged window in the input picture. As a result no blurring is introduced into the input picture in areas where ringing-like patterns are not detected. Therefore, the output picture includes portions of the input picture in which ringing-like patterns were not detected, and portions of the input picture with suppressed ringing-like patterns where detected. The output picture is an enhanced version of the input picture with suppressed (i.e., smoothed) ringing-like patterns.
