    • A roadway barrier component adapted to be assembled on a supporting surface with corresponding barrier components removably connected to opposed ends thereof for forming an elongated dismountable roadway barrier for flanking a roadway, the barrier being deformable under vehicle impact to gradually redirect a straying vehicle coming into contact therewith. The barrier component includes a pair of panels to be positioned along a lower edge of each panel on such a supporting surface in laterally spaced relationship to define a filler cavity between their internal surfaces for receiving a displaceable ballast material to support the component on such a supporting surface and to provide a medium for dissipating impact energy during use, and panel connection means for removably connecting the panels together in their laterally spaced relationship; each panel having panel fitting zones for use in removably connecting the panels of the barrier component to panels of corresponding barrier components to form an elongated roadway barrier having at least one elongated outer surface which is generally smooth and free of outwardly projecting obstructions in at least one direction parallel to the length of the barrier; and the barrier component being adapted to provide a lesser impact resistance in a lower zone than in a central impact zone of the barrier component during vehicle impact therewith to combat vehicle ramping.

    • An arrangement in concrete blocks which are intended to be positioned end-to-end to form barriers for e.g. roadways and parking lots. The concrete blocks have an elongate shape with an essentially triangular cross-sectional configuration with rounded side walls, and are interconnected by means of T-shaped metal pieces, the latter being secured in the end faces of the blocks during the casting thereof and formed with cross-bars, the interconnection of the blocks being effected in that two such cross-bars at adjoining end faces of two concrete blocks positioned end-to-end are enclosed by a tubular member, whereby the blocks are locked together. The blocks may be provided with a device widening their upper part and increasing the ability of the block to guide vehicles safely back to the roadway.

    • Posts, such as roadside delineators and sign supports are mounted upright from the ground by tubular anchors driven into the ground from their leading ends and having fins on their trailing ends embedded in the ground adjacent the surface thereof. A break-away support tube is secured in the tubular anchor to extend upright therefrom into a rigid but yieldable plastic tube with an elastic memory. The plastic tube carries a reflector, a sign, or the like at a level above ground which will attract the attention of drivers of vehicles on the roadway. The break-away tube is pierced at ground level just above the ground anchor so that when the plastic post is struck by a vehicle, the break-away tube will fracture at ground level permitting the plastic post to be forced to the ground without flying loose from the ground anchor and without springing back to damage the vehicle. The tubular ground anchor can receive an extension tube driven into the ground ahead of the leading end thereof to provide additional anchoring capacity in light soil ground conditions. The lower end of the break-away tube is wedged or clamped in the tubular ground anchor and the lower end of the plastic post is wedged or clamped on the break-away tube. When the break-away tube is fractured by vehicle impact, the entire assembly is reusable to reinstall the post in its upright position by discarding the section of the break-away tube below the fractured level and using the remaining tube length in the anchor and post. If the plastic tube has been bent or indented by the impact blow from the vehicle, it will soon recover its original straight tubular shape due to the elastic memory of the plastic. A new hole is then pierced in the break-away tube at ground level to form another fracture zone for accommodating another impact blow from oncoming traffic.

    • Moveable barrier apparatus is disclosed for use in controlling traffic along parallel lanes of a roadway. The apparatus includes elongate channels which are embedded in the roadway transversely of the lanes at spaced-apart positions. Carrier cars are mounted by roller bearings for movement lengthwise within each channel, and posts which are mounted on the cars extend upwardly above the roadway through slots formed along the channels. An elongate upstanding barrier is mounted on the posts to form a divider between adjacent lanes of the roadway. Actuators are mounted in each of the channels for moving the cars and posts lengthwise of the channels for selectively changing the transverse position of the barrier. In one embodiment the actuator comprises a single hydraulic ram, and in another embodiment the actuator comprises a pair of telescoping hydraulic rams positioned on opposite sides of the car within the channel. A lane transition zone is provided in which the actuators are operated through differential strokes so that the lane division defined by the barrier follows a curved or slanted path. In the transition zone sliding joints are provided to accommodate displacement of the ends of the barrier sections relative to the posts. The control means for conjointly operating the actuators includes a parallel fluid circuit. Releasable connectors are provided in the circuit to facilitate coupling with a mobile source of fluid pressure.

    • An impact barrier and restraint is provided for use on a longitudinally extending roadway. There are several barrier mechanisms, each including a base or diaphragm extending transversely of the roadway and related to the roadway by releasable anchors. In one version the diaphragm includes overlapping, transversely extending plates arranged to move transversely of the base. There are lateral buffer beams diverging and overlapping and secured to the diaphragms and to each other for telescoping movement. Between the diaphragms there are energy absorbing cells supported on the base and subject to disintegration upon impact of a vehicle or the like against the impact barrier, whether head-on or from the sides.
