    • A system and devices to actively induce turbulent flow in the intake tract of an internal combustion engine. At least certain of the devices include moving components which induce a swirling or rotating movement about a major intake axis. The adjustment to the flow provides more complete atomization or vaporization of liquid fuel components in an incoming fuel air mixture. Individual devices can be provided in individual intake runners. A single device can be provided in the plenum region of integral or monolithic intake manifolds. Rotation axes of rotating flow diverters can be inclined to also provide a tumbling or rolling component to the mixture flow. Inclined vanes of non-moving flow adjusters can also be provided to induce a tumbling flow component.

    • Swirl is imparted to an air intake charge by a gas swirling device which may be inserted into an air intake hose or secured to a throttle body. The gas swirling device has a cylindrical body which is split along a generally longitudinally extending seam to allow the device to adjust its radial dimension. The device is formed from a single piece of bendable material and includes a plurality of swirling vanes which are formed integral with the cylindrical body of material and which are bent radially inwardly toward the central axis of the cylinder. In an embodiment for axial air flow, each of the blades is skewed relative to the axis of the cylinder for changing the direction of air flow through the cylinder and to encourage swirl in the air flow.

    • An apparatus for generating turbulence in the intake manifold of an engine in a motor vehicle, the apparatus comprising a reversable step motor having a drive shaft and a drive gear fixed thereto; an elongated shaft being disposed for slidable movement along its axis and having one end disposed in the intake manifold and the other end extending outside the intake manifold, the other end of the shaft including a rack gear drivingly engaged by the drive gear; an anchor fixed in the intake manifold and supporting the shaft for axial movement; a plurality of fan blades mounted at the one end of the shaft for rotation about the shaft axis, each blade being pivotally mounted for movement between folded and unfolded positions in response to axial movement of the shaft; and a control unit for electrically operating the step motor in response to engine rotation rate or vehicle speed to cause the blades to unfold into the intake air stream when the rate or speed is below a predetermined value and to fold when the rate or speed is above a predetermined value.
