    • A method is disclosed for controlling a simulated moving bed system of a type including at least four series-arranged beds each packed with a solid adsorbent, with the downstream end of each bed and the upstream end of the next succeeding bed being connected by conduits to form an endless loop, and in which a fluid is caused to circulate through the beds in one direction, a feed stock and a desorbent are introduced into the system while a raffinate and a sorbate are withdrawn from the system, and the positions of introduction and withdrawal of the four kinds of fluid are periodically shifted in the direction of the circulating fluid flow. In accordance with the invention, two or more circulating pumps, provided with variable speed controllers and pressure detectors for detecting the suction pressure of each of the circulating pumps, are disposed between two beds. The flow rates of three of the four fluids introduced into or withdrawn from the system are adjusted to predetermined values, and the flow rate of the other fluid is controlled in such a manner that the suction pressure of one of the circulating pumps or the average of the suction pressures of two or more of the circulating pumps is held constant, and a rotational speed of each of the circulating pumps is controlled independently so as to control the flow rate of the circulating fluid and to maintain the suction pressure of each circulating pump at a low level.

    • Centrifugation chromatography columns including column members for containing a particle bed and a porous member underlying the bed. The column members have an upper receiving opening and a lower discharge opening. A receptacle is demountably secured to the column. Attachment is effected through cooperation between a lower portion of the column members and an upper portion of the receptacles. Support structures may be provided on the exterior of the column members to facilitate support thereof by a centrifuge. In another embodiment of the invention continuous column centrifugation chromatography is provided by means of a column rotor on which are mounted a plurality of columns. A collector rotor is provided with means for receiving material discharged from the columns. Relative synchronized movement between the column rotor and the collector rotor is provided. A distribution system for supplying liquid to be separated to the columns on a continuous basis is provided. Funnel means may be employed to facilitate transfer of effluent from the column to the collector rotor. A method for continuous column centrifugation chromatography employing a rotating array of columns which are subjected to a centrifugal force, effecting synchronized movement of an array of receptacles positioned to receive the liquid discharged from the columns and supplying on a continuous basis liquid to the columns.

    • An analysis of the concentration of the individual components of a sample is obtained using a chromatographic analyzer where the concentrations of the individual components or the sensitivity of the detector to the individual components vary over a wide range. The sample is injected into a first chromatographic column and trace components of interest are eluted to a detector for measurement. The major components are backflushed, diluted, provided to a second chromatographic column and then eluted to a detector for measurement. The dilution of the major components ensures the linearity of the detector response. Analysis of both the trace components and major components is thus provided.
