    • A process for the production of a plastic material part with a wear-resistant surface, having a predetermined nonplanar shape, comprising heating a blank of plastic material on a first side thereof opposite a second side on which it is desired to produce the wear-resistant surface, to adjacent the melting temperature of the plastic material, such that the temperature of the second side is substantially lower than the temperature of the first side. The blank thus heated on only the first side is introduced into a mold cavity, and is subjected to elevated pressure in the mold cavity with a surface of the mold cavity in contact with the second surface of the blank having a nonplanar shape complementary to the desired predetermined nonplanar shape of the second surface, thereby to impart to the second surface that predetermined shape while the second surface is at that substantially lower temperature. The surface of the mold cavity is produced either by extending a punch into the mold cavity in contact with the blank, or else the surface of the mold cavity is stationary and the blank is pressed into contact with the stationary surface of the mold cavity by pressure of a liquid, or both. The blank is of high molecular weight polyethylene having molecular chains oriented parallel to the second surface at least adjacent the second surface. The formed blank is for example an osteo implant such as a cotyle.

    • A polymeric composite structure having a polymeric shell layer with a finish-side and a non-finish side and a cross-linked thermosetting polymeric backing layer and method of manufacturing thereof is provided. The cross-linked thermosetting polymeric backing layer is simultaneously molded to conform to the shape of and bonded directly to essentially the entire non-finish side of the polymeric shell layer. The method includes forming the polymeric shell having a finish-side and non-finish side into a suitable shape, placing the shell into a mold, and introducing an uncured blended mixture of unsaturated thermosetting polymeric backing material and cross-linking promoter into the mold to force the backing material to directly coat the non-finish side of the shell. Curing the molded thermosetting polymeric backing material at a suitable temperature and sufficient time allows hardening and cross-linking of the thermosetting polymeric material and bonding directly to the non-finish side of the polymeric shell to permit demolding of the composite structure without damage.

    • A method of producing a molded assembly for at least partially encapsulating a touch panel structure. The method includes providing a touch panel structure which has a front side, a reverse side and an edge extending therebetween. A circuit is attached to the panel structure and includes at least one device. The panel is positioned in a cavity of a plastic injection mold which includes a hollow shutoff positioned relative to the device on the touch panel. When the mold is closed, a rim portion of the hollow shutoff is positioned against the reverse side of the panel spaced away from the device so as to at least partially shield the portion of the panel containing the device from the injection molding environment. The present invention also envisions a product produced by this method. The present invention further envisions a molded assembly which includes a touch panel in which the touch panel is retained in a molded portion and the devices associated with the touch panel are not degraded during the molding process. A window is provided on the reverse side of the touch panel. Additionally, a barrier material may be applied to the reverse side of the panel prior to molding so as to form a seal between the molded portion and the touch panel in the area of the window positioned relative to the device.

    • A method for fabricating a helicopter main rotor blade includes a compaction fixture for assembling and compacting blade subassembly components and a sheath spreading/insertion apparatus for spreading and inserting a leading-edge sheath onto the blade subassembly during the compaction process. The compaction fixture includes a lower assembly having a contoured upper airfoil nest mounted in combination with a support structure and an upper assembly having a pressure bag affixed in sealed combination to a contoured backplate affixed in combination to a structural support truss. The contoured upper airfoil nest includes a plurality of tooling pins for locating an upper composite skin in aligned combination on the contoured upper airfoil nest and a plurality of pusher pins for chordwise alignment of a spar assembly in the contoured upper airfoil nest. Spar stanchions affixed to the support structure provide spanwise alignment of the spar assembly in the contoured upper airfoil nest. With the upper and lower assemblies in locked combination, the pressure bag is pressurized to compact the assembled blade subassembly components.

    • A method for the production of laminated moldings, such as internal linings or panellings of motor vehicles and the like, and dimensionally stable parts in which a support part is provided with a surface lamination and in which initially a preform having the same volume as the support part, but not having the same surface area with respect to the final shaping, is produced. Utilizing the inherent production heat, the preform is then connected by pressure action to the lamination by back-embossing with the thermoplastic material of the support part and is given its final shape by material flow processes. The invention improves back-embossing in the production of laminated moldings in such a way that with reduced embossing forces the surface-unitary adhesion of the lamination to the support part is improved and the risk of bubble formation is eliminated. This is achieved in that preforms identical in volume to that of the support part and having the same contour shapes as the finished laminated molding and with a lattice-like structure at least in partial areas are subject to the material flow process so that the initially open lattice meshes of the preform are closed by local flow with the pressure application for the back-embossing process.
