    • A method and system for providing energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) heads are described. The method and system include providing a substrate, at least one EAMR transducer, an overcoat layer and at least one laser. The substrate has a leading edge and a substrate trailing edge. The EAMR transducer(s) reside in a device layer and on the substrate trailing edge. The overcoat layer includes a plurality of contacts. The device layer is between the overcoat layer and the substrate trailing edge. The laser(s) provide energy to the EAMR transducer. The overcoat layer is between the substrate trailing edge and the laser(s). The laser(s) are electrically coupled to at least a first portion of the contacts. The contacts provide thermal connection through the overcoat layer and the device layer. At least a second portion of the contacts is electrically insulated from the substrate.

    • A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a slider, an edge-emitting laser diode fixed to the slider, and an external mirror provided outside the slider. The slider includes a magnetic pole, a waveguide, and a near-field light generating element. The laser diode includes: an emitting end face that lies at an end in a direction parallel to the plane of an active layer and includes a laser-light emission part; and a mounting surface that lies at an end in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the active layer and faces the slider. The external mirror includes: a first reference surface that is parallel to the emitting end face and faces the emitting end face; a second reference surface that is parallel to the mounting surface and faces toward the same direction as the mounting surface does; and a reflecting surface that connects the first and second reference surfaces to each other and reflects the laser light emitted from the emission part toward the waveguide.

    • In a method for manufacturing a thermally-assisted magnetic head that includes a slider and an LD unit, the slider including an air bearing surface (ABS) that faces a recording medium and including a waveguide with a core for light propagation that extends from a light entering surface, which is different from the ABS, to the ABS, the LD unit being attached to the light entering surface of the slider, and the thermally-assisted magnetic head performing magnetic recording while heating the recording medium with near-field light that is excited from linearly polarized laser light, the LD unit is disposed in a position facing the light entering surface of the slider, a photo detector is disposed in a position facing the ABS of the slider, and a polarizer transmitting only light having a polarization component that is orthogonal to a polarization direction of the linearly polarized laser light is disposed between the ABS and the photo detector. An LD of the LD unit is activated, and the linearly polarized laser light is enabled to enter into the core from the light entering surface of the slider. Light radiated from the ABS is enabled to enter into the polarizer, and an alignment of the slider and the LD unit is performed while the photo detector detects light that is transmitted through the polarizer.
