    • A system for controlling the validity of printing of indicias on mailpieces from a potentially large number of users of postage meters includes apparatus disposed in each said postage meter for generating a code and for printing the code on each mailpiece. The code is an encrypted code representative of the postage meter apparatus printing the indicia and other information uniquely determinative of the legitimacy of postage on the mailpieces. The keys for the code generating apparatus are changed to change its code generation at predetermined time intervals in each of the meters. A security center includes apparatus for maintaining a security code database and for keeping track of the keys for generating security codes in correspondence with the changes in each generating apparatus and the information printed on the mailpiece by the postage meter apparatus for comparison with the code printed on the mailpiece. There may be two codes printed, one used by the Postal Service for its security checks and one by the manufacturer. The encryption key may be changed at predetermined intervals or on a daily basis or for printing each mailpiece.

    • An improved drop-on-demand ink jet print head is formed of a plurality of superposed metal plates that are diffusion bonded into a unit. A plurality of superposed metal plates are diffusion bonded into a unit. Punched and/or etched holes form ink passages that include manifolds that supply ink chambers through restrictors and exit orifices that supply ink to nozzles for ejection as droplets. Crosstalk among nozzles is minimized by the use of a compliant manifold plate and a relief slot in an adjacent nozzle plate so as to be coextensive with its associated manifold. The restrictors and the nozzles are substantially equal in diameter and length. The print head produces droplets up to 80 micrometers in diameter at frequencies up to 7 KHz with little variation in droplet size and velocity as a function of frequency.

    • In impulse ink jet printing, the method of, and apparatus for, controlling the projection of ink fluid droplets towards a printing surface by controlling the viscosity of the printing fluid at an orifice. An entire array of orifices can thereby be driven by a single pump mechanism. In one embodiment, the printing fluid used may have a liquid crystal polymer in suspension. Electrical fields can be selectively induced, in one instance, to so orient the crystals as to allow droplets to be projected through the orifice and, in another instance, to so orient the crystals as to prevent droplets from being projected. In another embodiment, heaters are provided at the orifice to heat the fluid sufficiently to allow droplets to be projected and a heat sink adequate to cool the fluid when the heater is turned off to prevent the projection of droplets.

    • A computerized method and system for providing enhanced help messages for equipment operation is described herein. A device having a processor automatically detects an error condition in the device, and determines that the error condition requires operator action. An appropriate message is selected that indicates a required operator action corresponding to the error condition. The message is configured to include a scannable barcode. The scannable barcode includes a website link to a website having more detailed information to assist an operator in performing the operator action. The message is displayed on a screen so that the operator can scan the barcode with his mobile device, and see the more detailed information on how to perform the required operator action. Alternatively, the message is configured as radio frequency data to be transmitted by the equipment using near field communication (NFC) technology to a mobile device having an NFC receiver.

    • An improved check sorting system capable of ordering cancelled checks for a plurality of accounts in a predetermined manner other than by account number is provided. Checks are ordered according to a priority value associated with the account number, and optionally check number, identified by each check. A database is utilized to store information indexed by institution and/or account number and optionally check number. The information includes a priority value. The check sorting system scans each check and reads the MICR code from each check. The institution and/or account number, and possibly check number, from each check are used as pointers to obtain the priority value for that check. The check is then sorted based on the priority value obtained from the database.

    • A method facilitating a transaction between a camera-phone user and a business entity. The business entity produces a printed medium indicating a transaction. The printed medium includes a barcode that includes direct contact data for communicating with the business entity. The barcode further includes specific transaction data relating to the transaction in the printed medium. Using the digital camera feature, the user captures a digital image of the barcode. The camera-phone is programmed to decode the digital image to retrieve the direct contact data and the transaction data embedded in the barcode. The camera-phone then automatically initiates a direct communication with the business entity via the mobile communications device using the decoded direct contact data. Once communications are established, the camera phone further transmits the transaction data derived from the barcode to further facilitate the transaction. The barcode includes an encrypted digital signature that can be used by the camera-phone to authenticate the identity of the business entity that created the printed medium.
