    • The invention pertains to an improved insole that combines insulating and therapeutic properties. The insole consists of a sandwich of several materials, namely a mesh that is adapted to rest on the bottom of some footwear, an aluminum foil whose shiny face is fixed with an adhesive onto the top face of the mesh. A polyethylene film laminated against the dull face of the aluminum foil also serves as the external face of an air bubble sandwich made out of one or two rows of air cells, separated from each other by a central polyethylene film, and covered by another polyethylene film. A second aluminum foil has its dull face laminated against a polyethylene film, and a mesh is then fixed on the shiny surface of the aluminum film with an adhesive. Finally, a resting strip for a foot is then fixed, by adhesive, to the top of the mesh.

    • An insole (10) for athletic shoes and the like. A first layer (12) of the insole is suitable for disposition toward a user's foot. A second molded layer (14) is comprised of a visco-elastic material. The visco-elastic material typically comprises a plasticizer, and, in minor portion, a resin material, and has the ability to flow, upon exertion of a force thereon, with sufficient elasticity to resume its original shape upon removal of the force. The second layer comprises a lower surface comprising recesses which make up less than 20% of the exterior surface in the absence of deforming forces. The recessed areas function to receive adjacent material of the second layer upon application of pressure representative of the presssure applied by the human foot. A third optional layer (16) of a foamed plastic material may be interposed between the first and second layers.

    • Shock absorbing structures suitable for footware and the like may utilize a flexible polyurethane of essentially linear structure containing unsatisfied hydroxyl groups and having a compression set of less than 15%, an elongation break of at least 500%, and a recovery which is delayed after compression by at least 0.7 seconds. The structures include a block or layer with one or more fluid cavities, each cavity having one or more relatively small passageways communicating the cavity with the exterior of the block or layer. The cavities may be closed by a separate layer bonded to the block or layer. In footware, the cavities may be strategically located and circular or rectangular in form with the passageways being similarly shaped and extending through the top of the layer or block.
