    • A mold for shaping a skin sheet has a three-dimensional body including a top surface and side surfaces that work as a shaping surface, respectively. The top surface and the side surfaces have a plurality of small holes communicating with a suction unit for drawing the skin sheet thereon by suction force generated by the suction unit. Each of the side surfaces has a product portion and a non-product portion parted at a trimming line, the portions corresponding to those of the skin sheet that are used as a product and not used as the product, respectively. The body has a plurality of guidance plates, each projecting outside at an edge line of the body. An upper edge of each of the guidance plates forms a ridge line in a shape of a wave. The ridge line descends from a position in the vicinity of an intersection point of the edge line and the trimming line to a direction of the bottom of the body so as to form a valley and thereafter ascends to an opposite direction so as to form a mountain. The height of the deepest point of the valley is lower than that of the trimming line.

    • A method for making plastic tooling by forming a surface coat over a model of the article to be made. While still in a tacky condition, the surface coat is sprinkled with sand. After the surface coat is cured and has adhered to the sprinkled sand, the surface coat is wet with a laminating resin. Then a sand and epoxy mixture is poured into the core box to form the tool. Another version of the method includes the steps of disposing a vacuum tube into the sand-epoxy core and closing off the open side of the core box through which the core mix was tamped. The surface coat is applied around the model so that the cavity in the finished core is suitable for vacuum-forming an object without forming the conventional vacuum holes.

    • A process for producing plastic parts, in particular molded plastic articles that are deep-drawn in a shaping contrivance into molded articles from at least one heated plastic foil, with the molded articles then being separated from the molded article assemblage in the separating contrivance and conveyed with the aid of a transport contrivance to successive processing stations such as a printing unit, or a stacking contrivance or the like. The shaping and detaching of the individual molded articles made of the still warm foil are executed directly after one another at one station, with forming taking place first and detaching then following by means of strip steel cutting, while the form still remains in the closed condition. It is also possible, with the aid of this process, to produce molded articles consisting of two superimposed foils with layers of an absorbent material disposed therebetween.

    • A readily adjustable mold is provided for transforming a heated plastic sheet into an adapter intended to restrain a received article from moving inside a container larger than the article. The adapter to be formed has a base configured to fit snugly within the container and a plurality of projections on the base that are spaced from each other to receive the article snugly therebetween. The mold comprises means including side and bottom walls that define a cavity with peripheral and medial regions, for operatively positioning the plastic sheet for formation of the adapter, and means disposed in the cavity peripheral region and moveable toward and away from the cavity medial region, for selectively locating the projections on the adapter base. The locating means in the peripheral region may include one or more projection-forming member(s) slideably mounted on each of at least two of the side walls for selective movement toward and away from the medial region. Any such member(s) may be independently moveable for such selective movement individually. The peripheral region may further include a removably insertable member adjacent to at least one of the side walls, to reduce at least one outside dimension of the adapted. Inwardly adjacent to that member, another such member may be disposed to further reduce said dimension(s), and may have one or more projection-forming member(s) extending therefrom toward the medial region to help center the received article in its container.

    • An improved vacuum forming process for forming a deep drawn plastic article with a flange in an area of high forming stresses wherein a mold mounted on a base forms the shape of the article. A sheet of hot plastic material is placed over the mold and a vacuum is drawn to form the plastic sheet into the shape of the mold to form the article. The improvement is forming a character in the mold portion that forms the flange in the area of the high forming stress, said character having dimensions such that properly heated plastic sheet material will be imprinted with a predetermined clarity during the molding operation. A heated sheet of plastic material is placed over the mold and a vacuum is drawn to draw the plastic material around the mold including the mold portion that forms the flange in an area of high forming stresses. The plastic material is then solidified and removed from the mold. The flange is visually inspected to determine if the imprinted character has the predetermined clarity. If it does, the plastic material was heated to the proper temperature for the molding operation. If it does not, it means that the plastic material was not heated to the proper temperature and the area will be subjected to stress cracking and therefore the article is defective and should be discarded.
