    • Apparatuses of an audio/video system convey user commands to one another via a serial control bus. The user commands convey key activations on a remote handset, whose keys include both "normal" keys such as "mute/unmute", and "repeat" keys such as "volume up" and "volume down". To convey a repeat key activation, a first control means within one apparatus addresses a key activation message to a second control means within another apparatus. The second control means synthesises locally a repetitive series of user commands, until a key release message is received. The need for repetitive user command messages to be sent via the control bus is thereby eliminated, and the frequency of repetition can be defined locally to give consistent response to user commands. The second control means can also implement a de-bouncing function, disregarding duplicate user command messages sent by a third apparatus which also responds to the handset.

    • An apparatus for transmitting data from a first device to a second device is provided. The invention is suitable for use in a system having first and second communications media. The apparatus includes a network interface coupled to the first medium for receiving and examining data from the first device. A clustering facility is provided for coupling the first device directly to the network interface and for selectively coupling the second device to the network interface. The network interface identifies the second device as being coupled to either the clustering facility or the second medium. The apparatus transmits the data from the network interface to the second device by way of the clustering facility, if the network interface identifies the second device as being coupled to the clustering facility. The apparatus routes the data from the network interface to the second device by way of the second medium if the network interface identifies the second device as being coupled to the second medium. In the exemplary embodiment, both media follow the Consumer Electronics Bus (CEBus) standard. For example, the first medium may be a wired coaxial cable medium, and the first device may be a video cassette recorder. The second medium may be a wireless infrared medium, and the second device may be a remote control unit.

    • A signal transmission system includes concentratedly arranged various kinds of electronic apparatus capable of transmitting information such as audio and/or video, and so forth.     • A audio system may be monitored and controlled from one of many remote locations. The audio sources are located at a central location, however, the signals monitored at a remote location may originate from the same or a different source as the signal being monitored at the central location or any other location. The sources are selected and routed to speakers by at least two independent selectors, and the volume is controlled by associated volume controllers, either in the speakers or at the central location. Control of the system is simplified through the use of one or more radio frequency remote controls. Commands issued to the system from a remote control are verified by a verification signal added to the output signal on the appropriate output channels. To alleviate confusion, remote controls retain exclusive control over the source and output they most recently controlled. General function keys on the remote controls are used to control specific functions of the currently selected source, but may map to functions in more than one source.
