    • To provide a card issuing device which can be manufactured smaller and at lower cost. The card issuing device includes the card storage in which a plurality of cards are stacked up, the card processing section to which the card is extracted from the card storage and at which information recorded on the card is read or information is recorded on the card, and the card extracting mechanism which extracts the card stored in the card storage toward the card processing section. At the card processing section, a card exposing section is formed so that a portion of the card extracted by the card extracting mechanism is exposed.

    • A sheet feeder comprises a support adapted to hold a stack of sheets, and a straight guide rail extending from the stack parallel to a transport direction and defining a transport path extending in this direction. A generally cylindrical sheet-lifting roller is provided above the support and is vertically engageable with the topmost sheet of the stack, this lifting roller being centered on and rotatable about an axis inclined to the transport direction and rail. This lifting roller can be rotated about the respective axis while in contact with the topmost sheet of the stack for displacing the topmost sheet in the transport direction and toward the rail. Feed rollers downstream of the lift roller are rotated to advance a sheet engaged thereby along the transport path in the transport direction.

    • A stack of record carriers in the form of rectangular-shaped cards supported in a vertical upright position are advanced sequentially in a business machine by a sheet feeding mechanism. The forward end of the leading card is pressed against a resilient stop at a feeding position, and the leading card is separated from the remainder of the stack by retracting means driving the card rearwardly to withdraw the forward end of the leading card from the resilient stop. In timed relation with the operation of the retracting means, a feed roller is brought into engagement with the leading card to drive the card forwardly past the resilient stop. The timed relation between the operation of the retracting means and the operation of the feed roller is determined by camming means including a plurality of different cams which are selectively operable to accommodate cards of different sizes.

    • A feeding mechanism receives a stack of documents, such as databearing cards, in a hopper, the hopper defining a feed throat through which the cards are fed individually and in succession. A feed roller is positioned for engaging the lowermost one of the stacks of cards, generally centrally of the planar surface thereof, the cards tending to bow about the feed roller and toward the support surface. The initial feeding effect of the feed roller in each cycle is to buckle or spring the card engaged thereby away from the stack and toward the support surface, thereby breaking frictional contact between that card and the adjacent card of the stack, greatly facilitating the feed operation. Drive rollers receive each card as it is fed through the throat from the hopper and transport the card from the hopper. In one embodiment, the feed roller is driven through a lost motion clutch from a drive shaft, in turn driven at a constant rotational speed. By virtue of the lost motion clutch, and the relative surface tangential velocities of the drive rollers and the feed rollers, the cards of the stack are fed individually and in succession, with uniform spacing between the trailing and leading edges of successive cards regardless of the lengths of the cards. Means are provided in the support surface of the hopper for separating the stack from the feed roller, thereby to interrupt the feed cycle. In a second embodiment of the invention, the feed roller is driven at a constant speed without the use of a lost motion clutch, and control means are provided for automatically effecting the separation of the stacks of cards from the feed roller. The automatic control means includes suitable detection means for enabling the feed means to feed successive cards of the stack, and thus provide the individual and successive feeding of the cards with the uniform spacing therebetween as aforenoted. In a typical application, the drive rollers drive the card through a sensing station, such as for optical sensing of indicia presented on the cards, and provide a stabilizing control on the card in the region of the sensing station for improving the accuracy of the sensing operation.

    • There is disclosed herein a portion of a document transport system including a document feeding unit and a document separator unit. The document feeding unit dispenses a plurality of overlapping documents into a guideway upstream from the separator unit. The separator unit functions to restrict the travel of all overlapping documents allowing only the single front document to continue along the document guideway and to space the documents entering the document guideway. A control system for the document separator unit functions to maintain the forces between the documents and the separator unit to restrict the travel of the overlapping documents. In the preferred embodiment, the separator unit is an endless belt which is moving in a direction opposite to the normal direction of document travel. The control system functions according to the basic frictional equation, F fN, to vary the normal force, N, thereby maintaining the frictional force, F, substantially constant.
