    • The discard removing device is for removing the billet discard and extrusion disc from the extrusion axis after the billet discard has been cut off from the remainder of the extrusion. The device has a pivotal mounting frame which pivots towards and away from the extrusion axis and gripping jaws on the mounting frame for gripping the discard; the gripping jaws are mounted on the mounting frame by means of a parallel link which enables the gripping jaws to move up and down, which parallel link can be tilted to enable the gripping jaws to be tilted away from the extrusion axis.

    • A discharge chute is provided for removing an extrusion butt from a horizontal extrusion press, with the extrusion butt having been sheared off by a shear blade which moves downwards between the container and the extrusion die. The discharge chute is pivoted and is held against the bottom of the extrusion butt by a resilient force so that as the extrusion butt is sheared off, the discharge chute pivots downwards against the resilient force while remaining in contact with the bottom of the extrusion butt, with the extrusion butt subsequently passing down the discharge chute whereby any free-fall of the extension butt is avoided.

    • The flying guillotine shears of the invention are for shearing moving rolled stock and have a blade carriage which moves in the same direction as and at the same speed as the stock and two cooperating blades on the blade carriage, one of the blades moving vertically in order to make the shear cut. The moving blade is directly coupled to a crank shaft by a connecting rod, and the crank shaft is connected to the carriage by a link in order to take up the reaction to the shear cut and is also connected to a fixed member by means of a radius rod so that the crank shaft is pivotal about an axis which is at approximately the same height as the crank shaft axis.

Wedges may be interposed in the frame firmly to brace it. The table support may be supported by a bending support via a piston and cylinder unit. The press frame may be capable of moving up and down.

    • The forging of large shell rings, particularly for boilers, gives difficulty, but it is desirable to forge the rings in one piece. My invention provides apparatus suitable for forging such large rings, having a vertical mandrel which projects up the inside of the ring and a forging tool which works on the outside of the ring, against the counter-pressure of the mandrel. The forging tool has a generally vertical, arcuate forging surface and the forging tool executes a rocking movement during forging. The tool is driven by at least two hydraulic rams arranged one above the other, there being at least one pivotal connection between each ram and the forging tool.
