    • A 4-20 mA interface circuit for use, for example, in a valve controller, communicates with a two-wire loop. The interface circuit includes a power extraction circuit connected to the two-wire loop and operable to generate a DC operating voltage for use in powering the interface circuit and a related device, the power extraction circuit including a DC-to-DC converter that generates the DC operating voltage as a voltage having a smaller magnitude than a voltage between the two wires of the two-wire loop. The circuit also includes a current sensor connected to the two-wire loop and operable to generate a measure of an analog current through the two-wire loop, the measure being used in controlling a device associated with the interface circuit, and a digital communications circuit connected to the two-wire loop. The digital communications circuit is operable to inject a digital transmission signal on to the two-wire loop and to extract a digital reception signal from the two-wire loop. The digital communications circuit includes an impedance controller having an operational amplifier connected to control an impedance presented to the two-wire loop by the interface circuit.

    • A system for process control comprises a server digital data processor and a client digital data processor that are coupled by a network, such as the Internet or an Intranet. The server digital data processor, which is additionally coupled to a control/sensing device and any associated interface equipment (collectively, referred to as nullprocess control apparatusnull), includes a command processor that transfers information between the network and the process control apparatus. The client digital data processor includes an information client (e.g., a so-called Internet web browser) capable of requesting and receiving an applet from the server digital data processor. The information client, further, defines a hardware-independent and operating system-independent virtual machine environment within the client digital data processor. The client digital data processor executes, within that virtual machine environment, an applet for configuring the client digital data processor as a nullprocess controllernull that establishes communications over the network with the command processor and that monitors and/or controls the process control apparatus via those communications.

    • Disclosed are methods for scheduling when to run a process to take advantage of time-varying input prices by predicting the nullranknull of the current actual input price among future input prices. The rank is that portion of a future time period during which the input price will be less than the current actual input price. An nulloperational cutoffnull is set based on the portion of time during which a process should run in order to produce a target output amount. Periodically, the actual input price is determined, and its rank is predicted. The predicted rank is then compared with the operational cutoff. If the predicted rank is below the cutoff, then it makes economic sense to run the process. Otherwise, it would be cheaper not to run the process at present but to wait a while in expectation that the input price will drop.
