    • A low mass clutch in which a thin hard metal disk carried by an output shaft is placed between a driven hardened solid wheel and the outer ring of a ball bearing. The inner ring of the bearing is carried on a shaft connected to a lever. In the quiescent state of the device, the disk and wheel slide relative to each other. To engage the clutch, an electromagnet is energized, exerting a force on the lever causing the ball bearing to exert a relatively high force on the disk. In response, the wheel drives the disk with an extremely rapid angular acceleration.

    • Apparatus for individually feeding sheets in which a friction feed roller positively driven in the direction of feed opposes a friction retarding roller biased in the reverse direction with a predetermined torque and urged against the feed roller with a predetermined force. The reverse bias torque is regulated by means of a spring and a controllable clutch which is disengaged in response to a predetermined strain in the spring. The spring and controllable clutch may comprise a helical spring clutch. In another aspect of the disclosure, the retarding roller is carried by an arm for rotation about a pivot center located such that the normal force urging the two rollers together is automatically suitably adjusted in response to changes in the biasing torque.

    • Apparatus for separating a copy sheet from a photoconductive imaging surface in an electrophotographic copier following image transfer in which a plurality of guides are stationarily disposed at transversely spaced locations across the imaging surface at sufficiently small spacings therefrom to intercept the leading edge of a copy sheet moving past the guides and separate the sheet edge from the surface. The guides are disposed at progressively retarded positions relative to the movement of the imaging surface to effect laterally progressive peeling of the leading edge of the copy sheet from one lateral edge to the other and have such progressively decreasing lengths along arcuate guide paths as to compensate for their progressively retarded positions and direct the sheet onto an exit path with a leading edge orientation corresponding to its original orientation in the transfer station. To achieve initial separation, the first guide is disposed at a spacing from the imaging surface less than the thickness of a copy sheet and is assisted by a pulsed air jet against the adjacent leading sheet edge portion. A pressure roller in the transfer station clamps the sheet portion behind the sheet edge intercepting the air jet to prevent air from flowing through the region between the sheet and the imaging surface and undesirably reducing the pressure in that region.

    • A combined registration, image transfer and pickoff assembly for an electrophotographic copier in which a transfer pressure roller having an elastomeric outer layer with a hardness approximating that of the copy paper is disposed across the imaging drum at a spacing from the drum greater than the thickness of the image toner layer but less than that of the copy sheet. A registration roller is urged into line engagement with the transfer roller to form a registration nip for receiving the leading edge of a copy sheet prior to its movement through the transfer nip. A selectively actuable gripper carried by the transfer roller is opened to receive the leading edge of the copy sheet when it enters the registration nip, then retracted to clamp the leading edge and carry it around with the transfer roller through the transfer nip, and reopened on the other side of the transfer nip to allow the leading edge to be peeled from the transfer roller and directed along an exit path. The transfer roller is driven independently of the imaging surface through a spring clutch which is overdriven by the imaging surface when the copy sheet is moving through the transfer nip and which finally disengages when the gripper is aligned with the registration roller. To prevent contamination by non-image toner deposits during start-up, the transfer roller is retracted from the imaging surface until the image-bearing portion of the imaging surface reaches the transfer station.

    • My invention comprises a ballistic impact printer which includes a gun for successively propelling balls to a printing medium spaced from the gun. The balls are fed to the printer from a reservoir and recycled to the reservoir after they have performed their impact-printing function. I provide a bleeder duct for the projectiles intermediate the projectile feeder and the gun. When no printing occurs, the balls are deflected to the bleeder duct and never reach the gun. When printing is desired, the bleeder duct is blocked in order to constrain the projectiles to be fed to the gun, past a deflector which normally diverts the projectiles to the bleeder duct. The gate is a rapidly acting, electrically actuated assembly employing a piezo crystal or crystals, an electromagnet, or a solenoid. The deflector is positioned in the feeding duct and may be spring-loaded so it will yield when the gate is closed.

    • Apparatus for collating, stacking or otherwise sorting successive sheets of paper delivered from the output station of a sheet-delivering device, for example, from a photocopier. A compact stack of a selected number of sheet-receiving trays is lifted above the output station and the trays are caused to drop one at a time to a position below the output station such that each can receive one or more sheets from the output station. In a preferred embodiment, the trays are mounted to move between the top and bottom of a vertically movable frame in which the trays are lifted to form an upper stack from which they are successively dropped to form a lower compact stack with an intervening space into which the sheets are delivered to be deposited on the uppermost tray of the lower stack. The top of the frame is supported by the upper stack and the bottom of the frame supports the lower stack whereby, as the height of the upper stack is progressively reduced, the height of the lower stack is increased, but since the frame lowers with the upper stack, the position and dimensions of the sheet-receiving space between stacks remains substantially constant. Mechanical and electrical devices and controls are provided for automatic or manual operation in various modes and in proper timed relation with delivery of sheets from the output station.
