Correct and erroneous data words are identified, and the presence of one of the following error conditions is sensed: (a) an erroneous data word preceded and followed, respectively, by correct data words; (b) plural successive erroneous data words preceded and followed, respectively, by correct data words; and (c) a predetermined number of successive erroneous data words preceded by a correct data word. These error conditions are compensated respectively as follows: (a) the erroneous data word is replaced with a compensated data word derived from one interpolation of a correct preceding and following data word; (b) the plural erroneous data words are replaced with respective compensated data words derived from plural interpolations of the correct preceding and following data words; and (c) at least the first of the predetermined number of successive erroneous data words is replaced with the preceding correct data word.

    • Apparatus for recording and reproducing an information signal comprised of a video signal and an audio signal in a plurality of successive tracks on a magnetic tape, includes a recording section comprised of a PCM processor which converts the audio signal to a PCM audio signal and compresses the same, a dummy signal generator for compensating for tape jitter by generating a dummy signal and supplying the same to the PCM processor where the dummy signal is added both before and after each portion of the compressed PCM audio signal to be recorded in an overscan section of each track, and a magnetic head assembly which records the video signal in a main section of each track and each portion of the compressed PCM audio signal and dummy signal added thereto in the overscan section of each track; and a reproducing section comprised of a magnetic head assembly which scans the tracks to reproduce the information signal recorded therein, a switch assembly which separates the video signal reproduced from the main section of each track and the PCM audio signal reproduced from the overscan section of each track; a PCM processor which converts the PCM audio signal to the original analog audio signal and a timing signal generator for compensating for tape jitter by enabling the PCM processor only during a period slightly greater than the period of the PCM audio signal recorded in the overscan section of each track.

    • An automatic tracking servo control system which is adapted to control the tracking of at least one rotary signal reproducing head which scans successive parallel record tracks on a movable record medium. Position pulses are generated when the at least one head rotates into predetermined position with respect to the record medium, and these position pulses are used in conjunction with control signals which are reproduced from the record medium and which had been recorded at spaced locations therealong in predetermined relation to the record tracks for controlling the position of the at least one head with respect to the tracks scanned thereby. A detector detects the relative strength of the signal reproduced by the at least one head during periodic intervals. A phase shift circuit shifts the phase of each reproduced control signal as a function of the difference between the relative signal strengths in successive periodic intervals. The phase-shifted control signal is used in a servo circuit, together with the position pulses, to control the tracking of the rotary head.
