    • A document that resists copying by ordinary color copiers and color scanners. An area that is printed with color dots using a gradient print screen that exceeds resolutions available on commonly available color copiers and color scanners. The area may therefore comprise lighter regions (having fewer screen lines per inch) and darker regions (having more screen lines per inch). Multiple colors may be printed with different gradient print screens, and regions which are darker or lighter for a first color may or may not be darker or lighter for a second color. The document may also comprise a second area that is printed with a moire pattern. The moire pattern may be generated by adjusting an angle between a pair of print screens, such as a pair of gradient print screens. A set of colors for printing may avoid common printing ink colors, may prefer yellow, light green, or light blue, and may avoid red, purple, or violet, to raise the difficulty in copying by color copiers or color scanners. A top layer of the area may be covered with a layer of matte varnish or transparent white ink.

    • A copier supervisory control system in which a plurality of copiers are connected to each other over a network is provided. Each of the plurality of copiers has a structure that compares a user identifier inputted by a user with a registered identifier. If the user identifier and the registered identifier are identical, the user is permitted to make copies by the copier. If the two compared identifiers are not identical, the user is prohibited from making copies. More specifically, a first copier receives a user identifier and compares it with its registered identifier. If the user identifier and the registered identifier of the first copier are not identical, the copier inquires of a second copier whether it has a registered identifier identical to the user identifier over the network. Upon receipt of the inquiry, the second copier compares the user identifier with its own identifier, and if the two identifiers are identical, it informs the first copier of the result over the network. Upon receipt of the information, the first copier permits the user to make copies.

    • An image-forming apparatus for forming an image on an image-bearing member includes an image-reading unit. The image-reading unit has an electric component which converts an original image to image data. The image-forming apparatus has a data memory in which the image data is stored, and an image-forming unit. The image-forming unit has an electric component which forms an image on the image-bearing member on the basis of the image data and a personal identification code. Furthermore, the image-forming apparatus has a control unit for controlling the image-forming unit so as to form an image on the basis of the image data at a predetermined timing which an operator requests.

    • A character-detecting section detects characters from an image that has been read from a document. In order to allow a character-recognizing section to make a judgement as to whether or not the character is identical to any character of specific documents such as paper money and securities stored in a RAM, a discrimination-level setting section generates discrimination patterns corresponding to the discrimination level, and supplies them to the character-recognizing section. As a result of the judgement based on the discrimination at a low level, if the document is judged as one of the specific documents, a specific-document judging section controls the discrimination-level setting section in order to allow the character-recognizing section to make a re-judgement for identification. Thus, the discrimination-level setting section supplies discrimination patterns at a higher level to the character-recognizing section. This arrangement makes it possible to shorten the processing time that is required for discrimination as to whether or not the document in question is any of the specific documents, as well as making it possible to ensure the reliability of discrimination.
