    • An electrical current collector system has an electrically conductive slip ring mounted to a rotatable shaft and a fixed conducting ring assembly forming a partially enclosed AC high voltage electrical current conductive ring channel in which slip ring contacting members are mounted. A compartment at ground potential at least partially encloses the slip ring and the fixed conducting ring assembly. A source directs a fluid into the compartment so that the fluid travels through into the conductive ring channel to perform at least one of cooling and cleaning of the slip ring contacting members. A hollow conically shaped insulator has a frustum with a narrower cross-sectional opening connected to the conductive ring channel and a larger diameter cross-sectional portion passing through and connected to the compartment for exhausting the fluid from the current conductive ring channel.

    • A rotor for an electrical machine according to one embodiment of the present invention includes first and second individual slip rings mounted on a rotor shaft. A first end of the coil wire for the rotor passes through a first axial passage in the first slip ring and is terminated to conductive material on an axial end of that slip ring. The other end of the coil wire passes through a second axial passage in the first slip ring and through an axial passage in the second slip ring and is terminated to conductive material on an axial end of the second slip ring. The second axial passage of the first slip ring is electrically insulated from the conductive material of that slip ring, so the second wire end does not inadvertently short-circuit to the first conductive material. Also, the first and second slip rings are each designed to cooperate in providing a gap therebetween which provides space to accommodate the termination of the first wire end onto the axial end of the first slip ring.

A thick-walled section supports those components requiring structural integrity such as the single bearing on which the non-rotating housing is mounted. The said bearing is held in position by clamping means thereby allowing easy disassembly for inspection or service. The said housing supports a generally cylindrical shaped brush block assembly utilizing a unique frictional creating means which permits the removal of the brush block assembly for inspection or service without the use of tools and, also, greatly simplifies the machining required for the housing body. An easily serviceable seal design is employed thereby permitting the matching of the seal to the environment in which the present invention is to be used.

    • A slip ring assembly comprises an insulating body having a pair of slip rings on its external surface, each slip ring having electrically connected thereto a respective connector element a part of which is disposed radially inwardly of the slip rings. The body has an internal bore which receives a shaft of a rotary electric machine in use, a side wall of the bore being provided with axially extending recesses which are disposed radially inwardly of the connector element parts respectively. The presence of these recesses, which may alternatively be of helical or annular configuration, ensures that the connector elements do not contact the aforementioned shaft in operation and thereby create a short-circuit. The slip ring assembly is produced by placing the rings and the connector elements in an annular mould cavity whose radially inner surface has projections thereon which correspond to the desired configuration of the recesses in the completed assembly.

    • A ball contact slip ring assembly for conducting electrical signals between two relatively rotating structures, and which is particularly suited for use in gimbaled inertial guidance systems. The assembly includes a slip ring disposed on one structure and a brush associated with the ring on the other structure. The slip ring is provided with a groove which extends around the outer circumference thereof and the slip ring may be composed of a relatively soft noble metal. The brush comprises a pair of spring-biased, resilient arms spaced from one another, each arm having an electrically conductive ball secured thereto which is adapted to ride within the groove of the slip ring and accommodate diverse motion while maintaining a consistent electrical contact. The balls may be composed of a low friction, corrosion resistant material while the brush may be composed of a suitably resilient material with high electrical conductivity which is different from that of the ball and which applies the proper loading to the balls. Where a plurality of such assemblies are required, adjacent brushes and slip rings are separated by insulation material in a molded or laminated housing, and the brushes may be fixed or allowed to float, being held in position axially by slots in the outer housing and radially by the brush block or the outer sleeve.
