    • A device and method for providing overvoltage and overcurrent protection to equipment and personnel that come in contact with electrical lines, particularly telecommunications lines. The overvoltage protection is provided by connecting overvoltage protectors between conductors of the telecommunications line, or between each of the conductors and ground. The overcurrent protection is provided by solid-state bidirectional, resettable, fold-back type current limiters that limit maximum current flow at a predetermined level. These current limiters are arranged in line to the conductors of the telecommunications line and in series with equipment that are connected to the telecommunications line. The overvoltage protectors and the current limiters can be combined to form an integrated protection device, or they can be packaged as separate and distinct devices. The overvoltage and/or overcurrent protection schemes could be used at building entrance terminals, remote terminals, remote cabinets with electronics, in the central office at the main distribution frame, etc.

    • A telephone line state detecting device that is connectedly provided with a hardware detecting circuit when a telephone line is connected to a modem. The hardware detecting circuit is connected to a processing unit such that, in use, the hardware detecting circuit can detect pulses generated by voltages flowing through the telephone line. The pulses are being processed by the processing unit to judge whether the telephone is disconnected or the electrical contact thereof is deficient, or whether the telecommunications equipment used in conjunction therewith is busy or not in use.

    • A vector DSL system includes a plurality of modems, which may be multi-port devices. Unprocessed user data is extracted from the modems and passed through a private vectoring data routing apparatus to one or more vectoring modules, such as vectoring cards. Each vectoring module includes one or more vector processors that include processing units configured to process the unprocessed user data on the basis of all modems' data for a given DSL tone grouping. Processing of the unprocessed user data removes the effects of FEXT from upstream and downstream user data and returns the processed user data to the modems using the vectoring data routing apparatus, which can be a specialized data transmission network utilizing one or more vector routers.

    • In accordance with embodiments disclosed herein, there are provided apparatus, systems and methods for optimizing DSL line configurations and parameters in a DSL system. For example, such a system may include means for: interfacing to a currently operating Digital Subscriber Line (“DSL line”) operating within a DSL system having a plurality of DSL lines operating therein; evaluating an active configuration of the currently operating DSL line by collecting operational data for the DSL line during operation of the DSL line; determining a plurality of candidate configurations for the currently operating DSL line, the plurality of candidate configurations being operationally compatible with the currently operating DSL line; selecting one of the sub-set of the plurality of candidate configurations as the selected configuration for the DSL line based on a preferred operational characteristic; and transitioning the currently operating DSL line from operating using the active configuration for the DSL line to operating using the selected configuration for the DSL line. Other related embodiments are disclosed.
