    • A method of making a two-dimensional exposure on an object with a plurality of light beams by a main scan for making scans with the light beams in one direction and a sub-scan for making scans with the light beams in a direction intersecting the direction of the main scan. In a distance detecting step, a distance between a portion exposed to at least one of the plurality of light beams and a portion exposed to respective other light beams is detected when respective the plurality of light beams are exposed toward an object. In an exposure start-timing changing step, the timing for starting an exposure to be effected by at least one of the main scan and sub-scan made with respective the plurality of light beams is changed according to the distance in such a manner that the positions of the portions exposed to the plurality of light beams are substantially identical.

    • A trapping technique which accepts a Postscript or other page description language (PDL) file and outputs a file in PDL format having the correct traps. The input page is first divided into sub-portions, or tiles, and the tiles are individually processed by evaluating the input file in a corresponding clipping window. Each tile is then analyzed to determine where edges exist. The edge data is fed to an edge converter which produces a list of color transitions consisting of the analytic description of each edge and the color information along the sides of the edge. The color transition information is fed to a trapping analyzer which generates trap vectors in accordance with a set of desired trapping rules. The trap vectors are then converted to PDL form. As a final step, the trap vectors are added to the original PDL file. The final trapped page may be printed on standard typesetters without the need for special trap generator hardware.

    • A printing device employs a semiconductor laser source for producing a laser beam, and a semiconductor-laser-pumped solid-state laser. The solid-state laser includes an optical resonator, such as a nonlinear optical element for effecting wavelength conversion, and a solid-state laser material disposed therein. The solid-state laser material is optically pumped by the laser beam from the semiconductor laser source and produces a laser beam to be applied onto a photosensitive sheet of paper. Responsive to print data, the intensity of the laser beam from the semiconductor laser source is varied between a first intensity level and a second intensity level. The photosensitive sheet of paper is insensitive to the laser beam when the laser beam from the semiconductor laser source is at the first intensity level, whereas it is sensitive to the laser beam when the laser beam from the semiconductor laser source is at the second intensity level.

    • A laser printer is disclosed which is adapted to be used for color imaging. The printer comprises three diode lasers, each of which emits a light beam at a different wavelength. Each of the light beams passes along a separate channel to a pair of dichroic plates which combine the three beams into a single combined beam. The combined beam is scanned by a polygon onto a receiving medium which is sensitive to the infrared. Two cylindrical lenses in each channel are used to focus the beam in the channel at a registration plane located after the beam combining means. An optical relay is used to transfer the combined beam from the registration plane to the polygon and to focus the beam in a cross-scan direction on the polygon. The polygon is optically conjugated to the image plane in order to achieve cross-scan error correction.
