    • A method and apparatus for dynamically reconfiguring a server system. When a new server configuration is applied, a previous server configuration is saved. When receiving a service request, a first server is selected by using a first scheduling algorithm according to the new configuration. If the selected server is incorrect, a second server is selected by using a second scheduling algorithm according to the saved previous server configuration. User data associated with the received service request is moved from the second server, if correct, to the first server. In this way, stored data will be gradually and dynamically reorganized from the previous configuration to the new configuration in a relatively simple way.

    • A method, system and computer program product for dynamically establishing a client's Time Sharing Option (TSO) and/or Interactive Productivity System Facility (ISPF) session and maintaining the client's TSO/ISPF session on a zero-downtime/operating system (z/OS) host over multiple service calls. A session provisioning and maintenance (SPM) utility determines whether a TSO/ISPF session exists for a client making a request for a TSO/ISPF service. When a TSO/ISPF session does not exist for the client, session establishment is initiated by generating a TSO initialization module in a new UNIX System Services (USS) process. Session establishment involves initializing a user's own TSO address space through USS and using USS service call API's to make TSO/ISPF service call requests in the TSO address space. The SPM utility maintains the client's TSO/ISPF session over multiple service calls, bypassing the overhead of having to establish a new session for every service request which requires TSO/ISPF services.

    • A method for scheduling access to resources of a database is disclosed. Users logon to initiate database sessions. Commands received from a database sessions cause tasks to be initiated. Each task is classified in one of a first set of groups based at least in part on one or more logon account attributes associated with the session that initiated the task. A weight is assigned to each group of the first set of groups. Each task is classified in one of a second set of groups. Each group in the second set of groups is assigned a weight. Each task's access to processor resources of the database is limited based at least in part on the weight of the group from the first set in which that task is classified and also based at least in part on the weight of the group from the second set in which that task is classified.

    • A method is described that involves identifying which session a received request pertains to. The method also involves referring to information maintained for the session. The information comprises first information that identifies a queue that provides notifications of requests to a worker node that is assigned to handle the session. The method also involves entering a request for a session into a shared memory. The method also involves entering a notification of the request into the queue. The method also involves, after failure of the worker node, retracting the notification from the queue, and, identifying a new worker node to handle the session with a load balancing algorithm.

    • A system, for use with a first application concurrently operating together with a second application, includes an activity manager and a communication processor. The activity manager intermittently receives data identifying activity associated with the first application, and determines that the first application is inactive in response to a first application timeout window being exceeded because of insufficient activity associated with the first application. The communication processor communicates to a managing application an indication that the first application is inactive, and receives from the managing application an indication that the second application is inactive determined in response to a second application timeout window being exceeded because of insufficient activity associated with the second application.
