    • An apparatus and method for splicing light conductors in composite cables, in particular marine cables, comprising a plurality of spliced cable sections of power conductors and sections of light conductors. With a view to uninterrupted armouring along the entire length and thus the ability to maintain a sufficient tensile and flexural strength, the splice of the light conductors is provided at a distance from the splice of the power conductors and with a cross-sectional contour which essentially corresponds to the cable cross-section. Then the armouring is wound uninterruptedly around the cable and encloses the splices of the power conductors as well as the light conductors.

    • In an optical fibre submarine cable the ingress of hydrogen ions is reduced if not eliminated by at least one envelope which provides a barrier to hydrogen ions.In one embodiment a copper tape (L) is folded longitudinally around the cable core comprising strength member wires (G,H) split aluminium or coppr tube (E) and optical fibre package (A). The abutting edges (L') are seam welded with less than 0.1% skips. Preferably the folded copper tape is longitudinally welded while a loose fit and subsequently reduced in diameter to leave an accurately determined small annular gap between tubes E and F which is filled with a water blocking material that is highly viscose at ambient temperature and effectively glues the tubes together. In an alternative embodiment, or as a modification to the embodiment just described, the aluminium or copper tube (E) has its abutting edges (E') welded to a depth sufficient to provide the envelope (or a second such envelope) but insufficient to cause damage to the optical fibre package (A) through the heat from welding.

    • In the manufacture of a lightguide fiber cable (21) in which a lightguide fiber core (32) is loosely disposed in a composite sheath 40 it is important to control the ratio of the lengths of the core and sheath. A core which is shorter than the sheath and which follows a shortened path on a reel may be unduly strained when the cable is installed in the field. This problem is overcome by coupling the core to the sheath by a system (25) which includes a constant speed linear capstan (146) and a relatively large variable speed sheave (150) that is positioned between the linear capstan and a takeup reel (154). The coupling of the core to the sheath is accomplished on the sheave after the sheath is elongated between the linear capstan and the sheave. The coupling and the elongation cooperate to compensate for the inherent shortfall in core length which otherwise would occur when the cable is wound on a reel. As a result, when tension forces that have been applied to the sheath are reduced, the sheath, which includes strength members having a relatively high modulus of elasticity, recovers to its original length and the ratio of the length of the core to that of the sheath becomes a predetermined value.
