    • A valve assembly for use with a catheter assembly is provided. The valve assembly includes a valve housing adapted for fluid engagement with a catheter assembly, the valve housing defining a longitudinal axis and having an internal passageway for flow of fluids relative to the catheter assembly, a valve member at least partially disposed within the valve housing and defining a valve passage, the valve member adapted for movement within the valve housing between an open position wherein the valve passage is in general alignment with the internal passageway of the valve housing to permit flow of fluids through the valve housing, and a closed position to substantially occlude the internal passageway of the valve housing, and an actuation mechanism mounted to the valve housing and operatively connected to the valve member, the actuation mechanism selectively movable in a general longitudinal direction to cause corresponding movement of the valve member between the open position and the closed position.

    • The present embodiments provide apparatus and methods suitable for delivering a therapeutic agent to a target site. The apparatus generally comprises at least one container for holding a therapeutic agent, and a pressure source for facilitating delivery of the therapeutic agent. In one embodiment, the pressure source may be placed in selective fluid communication with a proximal region of the container and fluid from the pressure source may flow through at least a portion of the container to urge the therapeutic agent through container towards the target site. In an alternative embodiment, the container and the pressure source may be coupled to first and second inlet ports of a connecting member, respectively, such that the therapeutic agent flows through an outlet port of the connecting member and towards the target site.

    • A method of diversion of an embolus during fluid circulation in an extracorporeal circuit which includes the steps of establishing a first circuit (100, 101a, 101b, 101c, 102, 103, 104, 106b, 106a, 107) between an outlet of a vascular system and an inlet of said vascular system; establishing a 5 second circuit (101b, 101c, 102, 103, 104, 106b, 108) configured to bypass said inlet and outlet; providing a fluid reservoir (102) a pumping means (103), and a bubble detector (105) in said circuits; detecting by means of said bubble detector (105) an embolus in said first circuit and sending a signal to an automatic embolus diversion supervisor (121) connected to said bubble detector (105); and controlling fluid flow direction means (110, 111) in dependence of the signal from said bubble detector (105); whereby said fluid flow direction means (110, 111) are controlled to redirect a detected embolus to said second circuit.
