    • A tool and method is provided for attaching an endcap to a medical instrument such as an endoscope tip, wherein the endcap includes an elastically deformable, endcap opening having an unexpanded diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the instrument tip and an expanded diameter that is greater than the diameter of the instrument tip. The tool has a first component adapted to hold the endcap and to receive the instrument tip and a second component operatively associated with the first component and movable with respect to the first component, wherein the second component is adapted to apply a force to the first component. The endcap opening may be elastically deformed to have the expanded diameter prior to positioning the endcap at a desired longitudinal location and angular orientation with respect to the endoscope tip.

    • A four-bar linkage for an articulation assembly adapted for use with a surgical instrument is disclosed. The first link is in the form of an actuation lever which pivots transversely to the longitudinal axis of the instrument. The second and third links are operatively connected to the first link. The fourth link is in the form of an end effector for the instrument, and it is rotatably attached to the second and third links for movement transverse to the longitudinal axis. When the first link is pivotally rotated, a driver assembly causes the second and third links to move in tandem generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the instrument in opposite directions. Consequently, the end effector rotates in the same direction as that of the actuation lever from an unarticulated position to an articulated position. The four-bar linkage is simple and efficient, and eliminates the need for a conventional central pivot for the articulation joint. By making the linkage the primary structural support of the end effector, clearance can be provided centrally between the second and third links to allow for the passage of additional linkages and members which are needed to actuate the end effector to carry out various surgical functions.

    • A clip applier and method for ligating a tissue structure is provided. The applier has a two stage actuation. In the first stage, a tissue structure is positioned into the jaws of the clip applier The jaws close and lock to a preset force to compress and temporarily occlude the tissue structure. If satisfactorily positioned, the second stage is initiated in which a clip is advanced through the shaft of the clip applier in a closed position. At the distal end of the clip applier, the clip is opened slightly to capture the pre-compressed tissue structure, and is placed over the structure. The clip is then dissociated from the business end of the instrument. Preferably the clip comprises two leg members disposed in close proximity to one another joined from opposing directions by a connecting element. The connecting element restricts separation of the leg members with opposing spring members so as to provide substantially uniform parallel deflection of the leg members from each other.
