    • Disclosed is an electronic ballast that comprises a rectifier receiving and rectifying the alternating current (AC) power and outputting a result; a first converter receiving the output current of the rectifier and changing levels of the voltage by the on and off operations of a first switch and outputting the result; a half bridge converter coupled to the first converter in parallel and comprising a first and second switches shared with the first converter, and receiving the output current of the first converter and changing the directions of the current flow according to the status of the first and second switches by the on and off operations of the second switch; and a resonance circuit, coupled to the half bridge converter, resonating the output current of the half bridge converter and converting the current into sine wave current and outputting the current to a discharge lamp. The ballast according to the present invention decreases production costs and increases the efficiency of energy transfer.

    • A pulse width modulation controller is shown which includes an error amplifier, a multiplying portion, an oscillator, a comparator, a flop-flop and a logic gate. The error amplifier receives an externally input feedback voltage and a first reference voltage in order to compare each voltage, and, in a current mode, the multiplying portion outputs a voltage which is proportional to the multiplication product of a voltage generated from a power switching unit and the difference between a second reference voltage and a voltage output from the error amplifier, and, in a voltage mode, outputs a voltage which is proportional to the multiplication product of a ground voltage and the difference between the second reference voltage and the voltage output from the error amplifier. The oscillator generates a clock signal and an inverse sawtooth signal. The comparator compares the inverse sawtooth signal with the output voltage of the multiplying portion. The flip-flop outputs a logic low signal when the clock signal and the output voltage of the comparator are a logic high and a logic low, respectively, and outputs a logic low signal when the clock signal and the output voltage of the comparator are a logic low and a logic high, respectively. Also, the logic gate controls the power switching unit by outputting a logic low signal when either the clock signal or the output of the flip-flop is a logic high, and by outputting a logic high signal when the clock signal and the output of the flip-flop are both logic low.

    • A remote starting control circuit for a polyphase motor includes a controller, a zero-crosspoint detector, a power switch, a commutation circuit and a motor drive output circuit. The controller controls an excitation current applied to the motor. When the motor starts normally, it is accelerated in accordance with a detected zero-crosspoint. If the zero-crosspoint detector indicates that the motor has not started under optimal conditions, the controller adjusts a power-OFF interval and an excitation pulse width and re-starts the motor accordingly. Because of the ability to controllably adjust the starting of the motor under various excitation conditions, the motor can be started successfully without such problems as torque dead-point, head sticking and insufficient starting torque.
