    • A method for selectively printing different messages on labels printed by an in-store scale involves providing an in-store scale including a label printing mechanism with a supply of labels and a communications link for receiving information from a site external to the store. The scale label printing mechanism is configured in a first state and, during the first state, simultaneous printing of two types of information on a first label takes place. In particular, both (i) product information for a specified product to which the first label will be applied and (ii) a first message pertaining to a product which is different than the specified product to which the first label will be applied, are printed on the first label. The in-store scale receives a message control signal via the communications link which configures the scale label printing mechanism in a second state. During the second state, simultaneous printing of two types of information on a second label takes place. In particular, both (i) product information for a specified product to which the second label will be applied and (ii) a second message, different than the first message, and also pertaining to a product which is different than the specified product to which the second label will be applied, are printed on the second label.

    • A system for an unattended automated service station for selling and dispensing products, primarily motor fuel, cards, from a service island, whereby a purchaser may purchase any selected quantity of motor fuel and pay for such quantity of fuel by a credit or debit card and may receive change in the form of currency and coins from his payment or as a result of a cash advance on the credit or ATM card. The components interact to enable a consumer to select a specific fuel or product purchase and pay for the purchase by either indirect payment through a credit card or by direct payment through any combination of coins or currency, have the fuel dispensing automatically activated, enable delivery of a preselected quantity of fuel, provide a cash or credit card receipt, and provide other information concerning other products or services for sale during the fuel delivery process.

    • A meat packing facility has several scales for weighing meat. All of the scales are connected to a central station which serves to display, monitor, store and process weight data from the scales. The central station comprises a personal computer, a monitor and a keyboard which are mounted on a rack. Hardware associated with the scales generates protocols for the latter. The protocol for each scale includes the respective weight data in digital form as well as identifying data for the scale. The protocols are sent to the central station where the identifying data are used to link weight data to a particular scale.

    • A method of selecting the operating mode of an electronic scale, and an electronic scale using said method, wherein either a computing mode or a checking mode is selected and operation is executed based on the selected mode. The computing mode is a mode wherein an arithmetic operation is performed based on the weight of articles sensed by a weight sensor and on items of data input from an input device having a plurality of keys, and wherein a display device displays information relating to the articles, which information includes the result of the arithmetic operation. The checking mode is a mode wherein the operation of the electronic scale is checked for abnormality. The method includes steps of sensing the state of each key of the input device at the time that power is introduced to the electronic scale, selecting the computing mode to enable execution of operation in said mode when it is sensed in the first step that no key of the input device is in the ON state, and selecting the checking mode to enable execution of operation in said mode when it is sensed in the first step that any key of the input device is in the ON state.

    • An analog voltage representing the weight of an article being weighed is provided by a strain-gage type load cell. The analog voltage is converted into digital weight value data by means of an analog/digital converter. If the weight value data which are provided after the lapse of a predetermined time period following the turning on of a power supply, are within a predetermined range, the weight value data are stored in a memory as an offset value. The data stored in the memory are used for subtraction from further weight value data are displayed in digital manner by a display. If the weight value data provided after the lapse of a predetermined time period is off the predetermined range, a renewal setting of the offset value in the memory is prevented.
