    • A die assembly (12) has a die (14) with a nose (16) positioned to project into the hollow end (106) of an insert (102) being installed in a panel workpiece (100). A pilot pin (32) projects outwardly form the center of the nose (16) and into the insert (102) when the workpiece (100) is properly aligned. The pin (32) is mounted to slide axially relative to the die (14). The pin (32) is biased outwardly but yields under forces exceeding a predetermined magnitude. When the panel (100) is misaligned and a ram (8) urges the panel (100) against the pin (32), the pin (32) retracts to prevent damage to the panel (100). Thrust plates (64) support the die (14) and move radially inwardly when the pin (32) retracts. Feet (22) on the die (14) are received into grooves (70) on the thrust plates (64) to allow the die (14) to retract and thereby prevent the nose (16) from damaging the workpiece (100).

    • The method and apparatus for forming flanged holes and a resulting plate and tube assembly of the type used in fluid-to-fluid, such as gas-to-gas, liquid-to-liquid and liquid-to-gas, heat exchangers. A depression is formed with the aid of a punch in a plastically deformable metal sheet such as steel, aluminum, copper and the like, while applying controlled counterpressure with the aid of a larger counterpunch so that material displaced from the space between the punches is laid upon the inner bore of a constraining die. Thus the wall of the depression is formed by purely compressive means. The base of the depression may then be removed to provide deep flanges of controlled dimensions free of cracks or splits.

    • A metal-working hand tool for folding over sheet metal flanges is provided that effect folding over without harming the flange surface. The tool includes a body adapted to rotate about a first axis, a structure for attaching the body to a power source for rotating the body about the first axis, a guide component extending outwardly from one end of the body along the first axis, a plurality of hardened metal rollers, and a shaft associated with each roller for mounting each roller for free rotation about a second axis fixed with respect to the body so that the rollers will impact upon and roll with respect to a sheet metal flange. In use, the metal flange of the metal joint to be closed is disposed generally vertically, the power source is energized to rotate the body, the guide component is disposed so that it is in a direction generally parallel to the flange, and the guide component is moved into contact with a side of the joint while moving the tool generally horizontally along the direction of elongation of the flange so that the rollers impact upon and roll with respect to the flange to deform it so that it extends generally horizontally.

The workpiece is shiftable horizontally upon the anvil to enable all portions of the upper edge of said hole to be brought into peening, deburring engagement with said concave juncture area of the peening tool.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for shaping the cross-section of a metal wire or metal ribbon product obtained by slitting metallic coil stock into multiple lengths of wire with an aspect ratio of 1 or ribbon having an aspect ratio of 2 or more. The product obtained from the slitting procedure is marred by the presence of a burr which impairs mechanical properties and consequently must be eliminated. In previous practice, this was achieved by feeding the slit product through the nip of a pair of mating, shaping rolls having a fixed engagement. However, problems arise from run to run when the rolls are in fixed engagement. For example, variations in the thickness of the material being processed presents difficulties with a fixed engagement.In the disclosed apparatus engagement is allowed to vary while the engagement force is held constant. In brief, this is accomplished by mounting the shaping rolls on separate support members with one of the support members being movable to permit the roll engagement to vary. A constant engagement force is maintained by the provision of a means for applying a constant downward force on the movable roll support member.

    • For smoothing the edge corners of a plurality of metal strips advancing side by side, pairs of upper and lower roll means are spaced across the strip path at the strip edge localities and are provided with slightly tapered roll surfaces, each pair of roll means having individually yieldable support pressing its upper and lower rolls toward each other for rolling engagement of their surfaces with the strip edge corners whereby sharp corners and other burrs are rolled below the sheet surface planes. Coacting fin and groove rolls are advantageously disposed to guide the strips at and between the strip edges, as advancing to the corner engaging rolls. Effective roll cages comprise pairs of complementary upper and lower modules, each module extending along the strip path and carrying one of the guide rolls and one of the corner engaging rolls, to coact with like rolls of the complementary module. The several modules, with one of each pair spring-loaded, are removably mounted on supporting structure and are thereon adjustable in position crosswise of the strip path, whereby various numbers and widths of strips can be subjected to edge conditioning.
