    • A wavelength division multiplex optical ring network comprises optical fibre (1-4) arranged in a ring configuration and a plurality of doped fibre optical amplifiers (17-20) arranged in the ring. The spectral response in the ring is configured such in use amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise circulates around the ring in a lasing mode to clamp the gain of each doped fibre optical amplifier. Each optical amplifier (17-20) includes respective control means (28) which in use control the optical amplifier to produce a substantially constant output power or to maintain a substantially constant pump power. In the event of loss of the lasing peak, detection means switches the doped fibre optical amplifiers to a different mode of gain control, for example, a mode to produce constant gain at the value before the loss of the lasing peak. Optionally, after a predetermined delay, the optical amplifiers may revert to constant output power or pump power mode. Loss of the peak could be detected by a peak detection circuit (27), which filters by means of filter (26) a fraction of the input or output power of the optical amplifier using splitters and/or by detection of a drop in amplifier input power.

    • The invention relates to telecommunications network (10), and in particular to a Passive Optical Network (PON), and a method for operation thereof. The telecommunications network (10, 60) is capable of handling increases in bandwidth per user over the predicted lifetime of the network infrastructure. The telecommunications network (10, 60) further utilises a greater proportion of the potential bandwidth carrying capacity of the network and minimises maintenance requirements. The network (10, 60) is readily adaptable to future bandwidth requirements because redundant optic fibres (18, 27) are provided for making more connections as required. The cost of laying redundant optic fibres (18, 27) is minimal when compared to the cost of laying additional optic fibres at a later date. Furthermore the cost of maintaining the network is kept to a minimum because of the use of PON technology and consequently the overall cost of installing and maintaining the network over a predicted lifetime of 20 years is reduced.

    • A ring network protection method for the optical transmission network relates to the digital information transmission and includes using the overhead byte APS/PCC in the ODUk to transmit the protection information of the APS. This method adds fields in the APS/PCC and further includes: a. the network element in which the protection switching takes place in the OTN sends the protection switching information to other network elements through the fields set in the APS/PCC of the ODUk; b. the network element which received the ODUk performs corresponding processing according to the fields carried by the APS/PCC in the ODUk and implements the protection switching for the OTN ring network. In the technical solution of the present invention, the overhead byte APS/PCC is extended and is used to transmit the APS information. The network elements in the OTN ring network perform the corresponding processing according the fields in the overhead byte APS/PCC so that while the protection switching is implemented for the OTN ring network, the problems occurring in the SDH APS will not appear in the OTN ring network.
