    • The invention concerns a display device for displaying graphical information, in the form of point patterns forming symbols of an arbitrary size and shape, each symbol being allocated a unique symbol code, as well as in the form of non-symbolic information, on a display unit (8) of a raster-scan type and comprising a symbol memory (13) including information on the point pattern of the available symbols, a pixel oriented image memory (2) including all graphical information to be displayed on the display unit, and a processor (1), by which the symbols incorporated in the image are read into the image memory by processing the information that is stored in the symbol memory. What is characteristic of the invention is a pixel oriented auxiliary memory (3) with the same pixel division as the image memory, each symbol in the image memory (2) corresponding to a pixel in the auxiliary memory, which pixel defines the symbol position in the image. The auxiliary memory is also allocated a row memory (4), each pixel row in the auxiliary memory (3) being allocated a memory cell in the row memory. Furthermore, the row memory is allocated a code memory (5) including the symbol codes for the symbols that appear in the image, each memory cell in the row memory including a pointer (ADDRESS 1, ADDRESS 2, ---) to the memory cell in the code memory (5) that includes the symbol code for the first symbol on the corresponding pixel row in the auxiliary memory (3), and the symbol codes for the remaining symbols on this pixel row being allocated the consecutive memory cells of the code memory.

    • A memory address signal for a display memory is generated from a memory address generating circuit. The memory address generating circuit has an offset register and a memory address counter in addition to a memory address register. The offset register stores an offset value corresponding to a difference between a width of the display memory and a width of a display picture in a scanning direction. The memory address counter counts up a character clock in order to deliver the memory address signal after loading a start address of each horizontal scanning line of the display picture. At the end of each horizontal scanning line, an adder adds the offset value to the memory address signal. The addition thereof is loaded into the address register as the start address of the next horizontal scanning line.

    • Method and apparatus for controlling the display of a raster scan color cathode ray tube. The tube is provided with an orthogonal array of picture elements (pixels) with each picture element having a unique binary address. An addressable memory having memory locations with addresses corresponding to those of the picture element has stored in such memory locations an address of a location in a color look-up memory for an alphanumeric color, for a graphic color and priority signals. In the color look-up memory at the addressed locations is stored binary signals representing the color and intensity of a pixel. In synchronism with the raster scan of the picture elements of the cathode ray tube, there is read from the memory graphic color addresses, alphanumeric color addresses and priority signals for each pixel. One of the addresses, either the graphic or alphanumeric, is applied to the color look-up memory, with the address that is applied being determined by the binary priority signals. The binary color signals stored at the addressed color look-up memory location represent varying intensities of a plurality of predetermined colors. The color signals are converted by a digital to analog converter into analog signals which are applied to the color cathode ray tube to control the color and intensity of each pixel as it is scanned.

    • A display member, for example a visual display unit presents symbols which are divided into modules. Each module consists of a dot matrix. A refresh memory has one word for each module on the visual display unit. Out of the words in the refresh memory, which correspond to the modules of a symbol, one word contains a symbol code and the other words define the dot matrices of the modules. Control information in each word indicates if the word is a symbol code or a dot matrix. A code transformation memory is supplied with the symbol code and has a word at an address indicated by the symbol code, which word defines the dot matrix of the module in question. A selector forwards to the display member, in dependence on the control information, the word read from the refresh memory if the control information indicates that the word defines a dot matrix, and forwards the word read out from the code transformation memory if the control information indicates that the word read out from the refresh memory is a symbol code.

    • Apparatus and method for writing text characters to a raster scan video display operated in an all-points-addressable, or graphics, mode, and for reading characters thus written. A graphic video display buffer directly refreshes the display with graphics data received from a microprogrammed processor. The processor writes a character to the display by selecting and loading into the graphics video display buffer a text character dot pattern retrieved from main storage, and reads a character previously written by comparing a dot pattern retrieved from the display buffer with dot patterns retrieved from main storage. To write a character to the display in color, the graphic dot image of a selected character retrieved from main storage is expanded to a selected pixel and color format, and stored in the graphics video display buffer. Text characters thus written in color are read by retrieving from the display buffer the expanded dot image, restoring the expanded dot image to its original form, and comparing the restored dot image with graphic dot images retrieved from storage.

    • In a data display system, data codes are converted by character generators to dot matrix video waveforms for the display of alphanumeric characters and graphical characters (such as segments of graphs or maps), control codes being used to switch between alphanumeric and graphical display modes. In the latter mode, however, certain alphanumeric characters, such as the upper-case alphabet, can still be displayed under the control of a particular bit of the data codes. For one bit value the codes are interpreted as graphical characters. For the other bit value the codes are interpreted as alphanumeric characters.
