摘要： Methods of selectively cooling and quenching surface regions of high-strength transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel are provided. The method may comprise selectively cooling at least one region of an exposed surface of a hot-formed press-hardened component comprising a high-strength steel. Prior to selective cooling, the component has a microstructure comprising≧about 5% by volume retained austenite in a matrix of martensite. The selective cooling is conducted at a temperature of≦about −40° C. and forms at least one quenched region comprising≦about 2% by volume austenite. The TRIP steel may be zinc-coated and having a surface coating comprising zinc and substantially free of liquid metal embrittlement (LME). Zinc-coated hot-formed press-hardened components, including automotive components, formed from such methods are also provided.

摘要： Improved methods for quenching a metal tube are disclosed. A method of manufacturing a metal tube generally comprises solution heat treating a metal tube at an elevated temperature, rapidly cooling the metal tube from the elevated temperature, raising the open end of the metal tube to an elevated position, and lowering the open end of the metal tube to a downward facing position, wherein the metal tube comprises an open end and an opposing closed end, wherein the immersing step comprises at least partially filling the metal tube with the cooling liquid, and developing an evolved gas inside the metal tube, wherein the raising comprises releasing at least some of the evolved gas from the metal tube via the open end, and wherein the lowering comprises draining cooling liquid from the metal tube via the open end.

A movable restrainer restrains movement of the ram. A wheel engages a forward portion of the carrier. A controller is operable to control the movable restrainer to restrain movement of the ram with the carrier and at least one metal object disposed adjacent an induction heating device, the wheel to rotate the carrier and the metal object, the induction heating device to induction heat the rotating metal object, and the movable restrainer to disengage the ram so that the wheel pivots away to allow passage of the carrier and the heated metal object into a quench bath. A plurality of metal objects may be arranged in a circular array in the carrier about a diameter generally equal to the diameter of an induction coil.

摘要： A process and apparatus for quenching a metal workload from an elevated heat treating temperature are disclosed. The process includes the step of flowing a vegetable oil quenchant over the metal workload to provide a cooling rate sufficient to transform the metal substantially completely to a desired second phase comprising martensite, bainite, pearlite, or a combination thereof within a preselected time period. The apparatus includes a quenching chamber that has a base, an upper housing, a door, and an associated actuator for opening and closing the quenching chamber. The apparatus also includes a vessel for holding a volume of a vegetable oil quenchant, means for conducting the vegetable oil quenchant from the vessel to the quenching chamber, and means disposed in the quenching chamber for flowing the vegetable oil quenchant over a metal workload disposed in the quenching chamber.
