    • A primary electrochemical cell is described which is capable of achieving high discharge currents. The primary electrochemical cell incorporates a novel cathode structure. That cathode structure has a cathode current collector which is comprised with a plurality of electrically interconnected layers of a porous metallic material such as a nickel screen. Interposed between the layers of the cathode current collector are layers of globules of a cathode material. This material has a composition of from about 40 to 99 weight percent of carbon black, at least 1 weight percent of a mechanical binder which is inert in the primary electrochemical cell and the remainder is graphite. When such a cathode structure is incorporated into a primary electrochemical cell, two features are obtained which contribute to the high discharge current capability of the cell. Firstly, because a multitude of globules of cathode material are utilized in the cathode structure along with a porous current collector, large channels are maintained throughout the cathode structure thereby greatly facilitating the diffusion of the electrolytic solution of the cell, throughout the cathode structure. Secondly, the conductive cathode current collector extends throughout the cathode structure and is in close contact with all of the cathode material.

    • An electrochemical cell is provided with means for isolating and segregating the mercury droplets formed during the electrochemical consumption of amalgamated anodic materials. The segregating means comprises amalgamable metal sheet, preferably of expanded surface area as provided by grids of screening or expanded metal lath, in contact and adjacent to the inactive face of the anode. While zinc is the exemplified anode, the grid will protect other amalgamated anodes including cadmium and lead in aqueous systems, and lithium, sodium and calcium in non-aqueous systems.

    • A battery capable of safely venting its contents without exploding includes a casing which defines a cavity in which the electro-chemical contents of the battery is confined. A rigid partition is disposed across an opening at the end of the casing, and a relatively bendable cover is positioned so that its under surface overlies the partition. A passageway connects the cavity with the under surface of the cover, and the cover is attached to the partition at at least one location. If the internal pressure of the battery reaches a predetermined limit, as may occur if the battery is overheated, the cover is deformed away from the partition to vent the contents. However, the cover does not become detached from the partition.

    • Electrochemical cells having an alkali metal anode, a carbon or (C4F)n cathode, and an electrolyte, comprising a solute dissolved in an inorganic oxyhalide or thiohalide solvent, between and in contact with the anode and cathode. The cathode material, which catalyzes the electrochemical decomposition of the solvent, is present as a composite structure wherein a metallic screen is coated on both sides thereof with the cathode material. The screen is so positioned that sharp spikes at the ends thereof cut into the walls of the can thereby maintaining positive electrical and structural contact. The invention is particularly related to the use of the composite cathode structure in flat, button-type cells since assembly of such cells using a prefabricated cathode composite disc, is readily facilitated.
