    • We present a tool that can enhance the concept of BWS training by allowing natural APAs to occur mediolaterally. While in a supine position in a 90 degree tilted environment built around a modified hospital bed, subjects wear a backpack frame that is freely moving on air-hearings, as a puck on an air hockey table, and attached through a cable to a pneumatic cylinder that provides a load that can be set to emulate various G-like loads. Veridical visual input is provided through two 3-D automultiscopic displays that allow glasses free 3-D vision representing a virtual surrounding environment that may be acquired from sites chosen by the patient. Two groups of 12 healthy subjects were exposed to either strength training alone or a combination of strength and balance training in such a tilted environment over a period of four weeks.

    • A chest press machine having a pair of converging exercise arms rotating around an arm pivot axle. Subsequent circular motion causes user's elbow extension to decelerate through the stroke. The direction of resulting force at start position is normal to direction of the resulting force at end position. A sweep arm attached to the exercise arm is attached via cords to some form of resistance. Changing leverage is exerted on the exercise arms as they rotate, thus counteracting the increasing difficulty of the stroke due to decreasing involvement of the tricep muscles. Attached to each exercise arm a hand-grip where gripped area rises from the horizontal to allow lateral movement of wrist through the stroke. The radius of the circular motion is adjusted by the telescoping hand-grip. As the exercise arms are pressed and squeezed together, the upper arms horizontally adduct, the elbows joints extend, and wrist joints move laterally.

    • Rowing simulators that include a variety of features that provide one or more rowers with a rowing experience that more accurately simulates on-water rowing and/or provide enhanced training feedback. One feature is a rowing station that includes one or two oars each having a vertical-feel emulator implemented as a compliant guide follower that engages a corresponding oar guide during the drive phase of the rowing stroke so as to simulate an oar's engagement with water during on-water rowing. In other embodiments, the vertical-feel emulator is incorporated into an oar support. Other features include: stroke gauges that provide visual feedback on the various phases of a rower's stroke, including the catch phase, drive phase, finish phase, and recovery phase; an oar feathering indicator; and seats linked together for training rowers to row in unison, among others.
