    • A method of measuring an after-glow of a stimulable phosphor sheet comprises the step of detecting an instantaneous light emission after-glow emanated by the stimulable phosphor sheet carrying a radiation image stored thereon by use of a photodetector when the stimulable phosphor sheet is being conveyed toward a system for final read-out after preliminary read-out is finished, thereby measuring the level of the after-glow. A method of adjusting radiation image read-out conditions comprises the steps of creating a histogram of preliminary read-out image signals obtained by preliminary read-out, detecting the instantaneous light emission after-glow by a photodetector, obtaining a signal Sx representing the level of the instantaneous light emission after-glow, and adjusting final read-out conditions and/or image processing conditions based on a value calculated by subtracting the value of the signal Sx from a characteristic value of the preliminary read-out image signals in the histogram.

    • In a method of adjusting read-out conditions for a radiation image stored on a stimulable phosphor sheet by limiting the irradiation field in a rectangular form, digital image signals at respective positions on the stimulable phosphor sheet are detected based on image information obtained by preliminary read-out. X and Y axes are set along two adjacent sides of a contour of the rectangular irradiation field on the stimulable phosphor sheet. The digital image signals are added up in the X and Y axis directions respectively, and positions on the Y axis at which the levels of the added-up signals in the X axis direction are equal to a predetermined threshold value Th and the positions on the X axis at which the levels of the added-up signals in the Y axis directions are equal to the threshold value Th are detected. A region surrounded by straight lines passing through these positions along the X and Y axes is recognized as the irradiation field. The read-out conditions for final read-out are adjusted based on the preliminary read-out image information within the irradiation field.

    • A method of adjusting radiation image read-out conditions used in a radiation image recording and reproducing system wherein preliminary read-out and final read-out are conducted for detecting the radiation image stored in a stimulable phosphor sheet. The method comprises determining a histogram of the amount of light emitted by the stimulable phosphor sheet when it is exposed to stimulating rays during the preliminary read-out. From the histogram, the maximum light emission amount Smax and the minimum light emission amount Smin of a desired image information range are calculated. Read-out conditions are adjusted so that Smax and Smin correspond respectively to the maximum signal level Qmax and the minimum signal level Qmin of a desired input signal range in an image processing apparatus which are determined by the maximum density Dmax and the minimum density Dmin of a correct density range in a finally reproduced visible image.

    • In a radiation image recording and reproducing system, final read-out of a radiation image stored in a stimulable phosphor sheet is conducted by exposing the stimulable phosphor sheet to stimulating rays, and photoelectrically detecting light emitted by the stimulable phosphor sheet upon stimulation thereof to obtain a visible image. Prior to the final read-out, preliminary read-out is conducted for detecting the image input information by use of stimulating rays having stimulation energy lower than the stimulation energy of stimulating rays used in the final read-out. By the preliminary read-out, the minimum stimulated emission intensity among all points over the whole surface of the stimulable phosphor sheet and that among all points in one region within the radiation exposure field of the stimulable phosphor sheet at the time of the image recording are measured. A scale factor in the final read-out is adjusted in accordance with the difference between the minimum stimulated emission intensities thus measured.
