    • An image display apparatus and method are provided. The image display apparatus includes an external light detection module which detects an intensity of external illumination; a storage module which stores a plurality of light emitting unit control values; and a control module which selectively performs, according to a result of a determination, a lightness compensation operation for compensating a lightness of a light emitting unit and a visibility adjustment operation for adjusting the visibility of the original input image. The method includes detecting an intensity of external illumination; determining whether a visibility of an original input image can be ensured according to an input light emitting control value and the detected external illumination intensity; and selectively performing, according to the determination, a lightness compensation operation for compensating a lightness of a light emitting unit and a visibility adjustment operation for adjusting the visibility of the original input image.

    • A method and apparatus for expanding bit resolution using local information of an image receives an input image. First, second and third threshold value used to enhance bit resolution, to detect a texture and to detect a pattern, respectively, are determined considering global information of the input image. A texture existing in a mask region composed of surrounding pixels within a predetermined range around a current pixel is determined using the second threshold value. A regularly repeated pattern existing in the mask region is determined using the third threshold value if no texture exists in the mask region. The first threshold value is decreased if a texture or pattern exists in the mask region. Values of mask region pixels are adjusted depending on the first threshold value, and bit resolution of the current pixel value is enhanced using a resultant value obtained by filtering the adjusted pixel values.

    • An image retrieval method and apparatus independent of an illumination change are provided. The image retrieval method involves: inputting a query image; detecting an illumination color from the query image and converting the illumination color into a standard illumination color; extracting color information of the query image by using color descriptors; and retrieving a similar image by comparing the extracted color information with color information of a database which converts a variety of images into images of standard illumination colors and extracts and stores the color information of the images in advance. According to the method, without changing the structures of color descriptors or a similarity comparison using color information, an image retrieval independent of illumination changes is enabled by adding only a preceding step of standard illumination conversion.

    • A method and an apparatus for adaptively enhancing a color of an image are provided. The apparatus includes a saturation component deriving unit, a saturation enhancement function determining variable calculator, a saturation enhancement unit, and a saturation component synthesizing unit. The saturation component deriving unit derives a saturation component from an input image. The saturation enhancement function determining variable calculator determines a saturation enhancement function used to enhance the saturation of the input image based upon a predetermined reference value. The saturation enhancement unit changes the derived saturation component using the saturation enhancement function. The saturation component synthesizing unit synthesizes the changed saturation component and other components of the input image and generates an output image based upon the synthesized components.
