    • A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for increasing the utilization of available bandwidth, which will simultaneously maximize revenue for wireless service providers. This can be accomplished through a flexible marketing mechanism based on system utilization, which will enable service providers to tailor the system charging rate based upon the current system utilization rate. For example, a mobile subscriber can subscribe to a flexible marketing service, which monitors the number of idle channels within a cell site that the mobile subscriber is currently located in, and sends a Short Message Service (SMS) message to the mobile subscriber offering the mobile subscriber a discounted rate for calls placed within a certain time period when the number of idle channels falls below a desired system utilization ratio.

    • Flexible diversity antennas having gain and bandwidth capabilities suitable for use within small communications devices such as radiotelephones are provided. A core of flexible material has an electrical conductor embedded therewithin in a meandering pattern and is surrounded by a first layer of flexible dielectric material. At one end of the antenna, the first layer of dielectric material is surrounded by flexible conductive material. The flexible conductive material is surrounded by a second layer of flexible dielectric material. The portion of the antenna surrounded by conductive material serves as a tuning element, and the portion of the antenna not surrounded by conductive material serves as a radiating element. A flexible signal feed is integral with the antenna and extends outwardly from the flexible core.

    • An apparatus and method for cooling an electronic device and generating a vibrational signal to alert a user of a particular state of the electronic device. The apparatus includes a motor having a rotor that is rotatable in first and second opposite directions around a first axis, a cooling flow generator, and a vibrational signal generator. The cooling flow generator is operably connected to the rotor to produce a cooling flow in response to rotation of the rotor in at least one of the first and second directions. The vibrational signal generator is operably connected to the rotor to produce a vibrational output of a first magnitude in response to rotation of the rotor in the first direction, and a vibrational output of a second magnitude less than the first magnitude in response to rotation of the rotor in the second direction. The first magnitude is sufficient to generate a vibrational signal that can be sensed by a user to alert the user of a particular state of an electronic device containing the apparatus.

    • A battery pack is provided for use with a mobile phone. The battery pack includes audio signal power amplifier circuitry with an inductive coil. The inductive coil boosts the magnetic field strength of the audio signal received by the phone, so that a tele-coil circuit for a hearing aid can be used to pick up the audio signal received by the phone. Consequently, the picked up audio signal can be discerned from the magnetic noise created by the phone. Also, the use of the battery coil allows a tele-coil pick up of the audio signal even if the phone has a speaker that does not generate an appreciable magnetic field.

    • A first mobile station is correlated with a second mobile station as a permitted home zone party. The second mobile station is in speech connection with another telecommunications party. In the event that the first mobile station wishes to join in on the conversation, the first mobile station simply transmits a selected service code A to the serving mobile switching center (MSC). The serving MSC retrieves the data correlating the first mobile station with the second mobile station, determines that the first mobile station is currently located within the same home zone, and conferences the first mobile station into the existing call connection involving the second mobile station by utilizing one of the call conference circuits. As an illustration, members of the same household can designate and correlate each other as permitted home zone parties. Thereinafter, whenever more than one members are within the designated home zone, and one is involved in a call connection, any other member can join in on the conversation by simply picking up a mobile station and dialing the service code.

    • A data transmission protocol for use in an ATM-based point-to-multipoint passive optical network having a headend facility and a plurality of downstream network units, wherein downstream data is transmitted in serial data frames comprising one hundred eighty, fifty-four byte downstream slots, including two framing slots and one hundred seventy-eight ATM cell slots, which are transmitted every 125 .mu.sec for an overall downstream bit rate of 622.08 Mbps. Upstream data transmission is provided on a "permit" basis controlled by the headend based on monitoring ATM cell queue sizes at respective network units, wherein each downstream frame slot includes a one byte MAC overhead header field for transmitting upstream transmission permits allocated over twenty bit permit fields, for a total of seventy-two upstream permits allocated per downstream frame. Upstream data is transmitted from an individual network units in five hundred forty bit upstream data slots, each upstream slot having a preamble portion and a payload portion,--i.e., with seventy-two upstream slots are transmitted every 125 .mu.sec, thereby forming upstream frames received at the headend at a data rate of 311.04 Mbps. Upstream bandwidth permits are based on a selected set of service priorities, wherein the respective permits specify which ATM service type is to be transmitted.

    • The present invention relates to a method for transmitting multiresolution audio signals via wireless devices in a radio frequency communication system wherein audio signals are decomposed into levels of resolution. The audio signal is decomposed into levels including a base signal at a base transmission rate and one or more signal details and input into a code rate selector, controlled by either party to the communication. The base signal represents the coarsest resolution or quality of the signal. Each signal detail, when added to the base signal, improves the resolution of the signal by increasing the detail and the transmission rate. An audio receiving unit transmits a request for audio transmission to the audio transmitting unit. In response to the initial request, the base signal is transmitted to the audio receiving unit. If the base signal is insufficient, the sound quality can be increased incrementally by sending further requests to transmit additional signal detail from the code rate selector. The additional signal detail is then recombined with the base signal at the audio transmitting unit to provide a higher level of sound quality to the signal. The higher quality audio signal is then transmitted to the audio receiving unit.
