    • Embodiments disclosed herein relate to methods and systems for grouping pilot signals and using such grouping for pilot strength reporting and set management in multi-carrier communication systems. In one embodiment, an access network may assign a group identifier (or “group ID”) to each of the pilot signals associated with the sector, e.g., based on the coverage areas of the pilot signals, and transmit the pilot signals with the corresponding group IDs. PN offset may be used as the group ID. An access terminal may group the pilot signals received into one or more pilot groups in accordance with their group IDs, and select a representative pilot signals from each pilot group for pilot strength reporting. The access terminal may also use the pilot grouping to perform effective set management.

    • Disclosed user equipment performs intermittent reception in a different frequency from a frequency of a serving cell belonging to a current radio access network or in a different radio access network from the current radio access network. The user equipment includes a receiving unit for receiving and demodulating a control signal and a cell search unit for performing a cell search in a specified frequency. When a release signal is received, the user equipment switches to a preliminary intermittent reception mode where the receiving unit intermittently receives the control signal in the serving cell and the cell search unit performs the cell search in the different frequency or the different radio access network between intermittent reception timings. Then, the user equipment switches to a normal intermittent reception mode where the receiving unit intermittently receives the control signal in the different frequency or the different radio access network.

    • Techniques to support positioning of roaming mobile stations are described. A roaming mobile station communicates with a visited network and has a data connection to a home network. The mobile station sends a request for positioning assistance to a home position determining entity (H-PDE) in the home network. The H-PDE determines that base station almanac (BSA) data applicable for the mobile station is not locally available and sends a request for location information for the mobile station to a designated network entity. This entity may be a BSA server storing BSA data for different networks or a visited PDE (V-PDE) in the visited network. The H-PDE receives location information (e.g., BSA data, assistance data, and/or a position estimate for the mobile station) from the designated network entity and provides positioning assistance to the mobile station based on the received location information.

    • In a wireless network, a mobile station is in a serving radio link with a serving base station. A handover is desired so that the mobile station can establish a target radio link with a target base station. When the handover process is initiated, the target base station is alerted about the impending handover by the serving base station. The target base station allocates a radio resource set and provides information on the radio resource set piggy-backed onto an alert response message to the serving base station. The serving base station relays radio resource set piggy-backed onto either a handover request or response message to the mobile station. The mobile station breaks the serving radio link with the serving base station and establishes the target radio link using the radio resource set.

    • A system method and computer program product for setting up a wireless electronic device to join a wireless local area network (LAN). The method upon which the system and computer program product is based includes sending a setup request from the wireless electronic device to a control device, the setup request including a request to be added to the wireless LAN, and receiving at the wireless device a data package from the control device, the data package including network information necessary for the wireless device to join the wireless LAN. The network information are then executed at the wireless device to establish a wireless connection to an access point of the wireless LAN. The setup request may be sent at a low power to ensure that only the control device in close proximity can receive the request. After the wireless connection to the LAN is established, the wireless electronic device resumes full power communications.
