    • A numerical expression recognizing apparatus for recognizing a handwritten numerical expression and outputting it as a code train. This apparatus includes: a coordinates input apparatus for inputting a numerical expression consisting of characters including numerals and signs by coordinates; a recognition circuit for recognizing the characters including the numerals and signs and constructing the numerical expression on the basis of a set of the coordinates which were input by the coordinates input apparatus; and an output control circuit for outputting the pattern of the numerical expression constructed by the characters on the basis of the coordinates which were input by the coordinates input apparatus and the characters recognized by the recognition circuit. The pattern of the numerical expression is displayed by a liquid crystal display. The recognition circuit has a converter to convert the characters constructing the numerical expression which were input by the coordinates input apparatus into the code information. With this apparatus, a numerical expression including a fraction, a power, a square root, or the like can be directly easily input in accordance with the expressing method which is ordinarily used in mathematics in a manner similar to one's handwriting.

    • The method and system for precise time based presentation of recorded medical data, such as cardiac data, encephalographic data, fetal monitor data or the like, which has been recorded on an ordinary audio cassette tape utilizing an inexpensive presentation device. An off-the-shelf tape transport deck is utilized which operates at an actual presentation speed which varies in a linear fashion in response to variations of a control signal which do not vary by greater than a selected maximum value during a given time period and in a nonlinear fashion in response to variations of a control signal which do vary by greater than the selected maximum value during a given time period. A timing track signal is utilized to determine actual presentation speed and small variations between the desired presentation speed and the actual presentation speed are coupled to a linear control system and utilized to vary the control signal at a rate which does not exceed a first rate. Large variations between the desired presentation speed and the actual presentation speed are coupled to a nonlinear control system and utilized to vary the control signal with respect to time at a constant rate, ensuring stable operation despite the occurrence of large variations in presentation speed. An integration element is utilized in conjunction with the linear control system to induce a zero steady state error between desired presentation speed and the actual presentation speed over time while the linear control system is active.

    • A storage system for the storage of setting values for adjusting devices on printing machines including a portable memory unit for the exchange of data with a device for communication, preferably disposed on the printing machine. A housing of the memory unit contains electrically operated, solid-state storage elements that are coupled to an electronic control unit for making logic decisions. The memory unit contains at least one data input in the form of at least one contactlessly working sensor and a data output in the form of at least one contactlessly scannable output element, both optically coupled to corresponding optical elements of the device for communication through viewing windows during data exchange. For the display and input of storage information and values, a display and a manual input device are located on the memory housing. The memory unit is supplied with power without metallic coupling by an external power supply which supplies a power supply internal to the memory unit with the operating energy required by means of inductive capacitive or sound generated externally to the memory unit. This assures a largely interference-proof and substantially maintenance-free data exchange.
