    • In one aspect of the present invention, an apparatus for measuring the height of liquid contained in a storage tank is disclosed. A tube is disposed inside the tank. A float is disposed inside the tube and is buoyed on the surface of the liquid. An ultrasonic transducer is disposed inside the tube. The ultrasonic transducer emits ultrasonic pulses toward the float, receives the reflected ultrasonic pulses, and responsively produces an echo signal. The float has a top portion and a bottom portion separated by a cylindrical portion. The bottom portion including an spherical surface which receives the ultrasonic pulses. The spherical surface has a predetermined radius which is a function of the inside diameter of the tube, the height of the cylindrical portion of the float and the outside diameter of the cylindrical portion of the float. A temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the liquid and produces a thermometric signal in response to the liquid temperature. A microprocessor receives the echo and thermometric signals, determines the speed of the ultrasonic pulse traveling in the liquid, and responsively determines the liquid height.

    • A sensor assembly is provided for determining the level of liquid, such as fuel, in a tank such as a motor vehicle fuel tank. A mounting bracket has a support end adapted to be supported from the tank and also has a distal connection end. A liquid level sensor has lower and upper ends and a resistor element extending therebetween, and is connected to the connection end of the mounting bracket by a shaft. A torsional spring is disposed around the shaft, and biases the liquid level sensor from a retracted position and toward a deployed position. In the retracted position, the sensor assembly is insertable through an access hole in the tank. In the deployed position, the upper end of the liquid level sensor is disposed generally above the shaft and the resistor element is disposed generally vertically to provide the greatest resolution possible with both linear and angular sweep floats.

    • This guage is adapted to measure the depth of fluid flowing past a flume or weir in a generally horizontally disposed conduit. It comprises a transparent tube or stilling well which contains a float, and which is adjustably secured by a pair of clamps to an elongate supporting rod. The float can be clamped against movement in the well by a hose, which extends downwardly in the bore of the well, and which is sealed at its lower end. The hose is connected at its upper end to a manually-operable vacuum device which can be manipulated either to collapse or expand the hose. In use the hose is collapsed and the lower end of the supporting rod is inserted downwardly into a conduit to support the lower end of the well a predetermined distance above the bottom of the conduit, and in advance of the associated weir or flume. The flowing fluid causes the float to rise in the well to a height proportional to the depth of the flowing fluid, after which the vacuum device is operated to expand the hose causing it to engage and clamp the float against further movement in the well. Thereafter the support is removed from the conduit and the now-clamped float is read against a graduated scale which is inscribed on the transparent well, and which is calibrated to indicate numerically the depth of the fluid in the channel.

    • The invention represents an evaporation and/or precipitation measuring equipment, which can measure with high-accuracy, continuously and automatically the evaporation of an open water surface and simultaneously eventual precipitation. The value of evaporation, which is defined as the decrease of the water level of a standard evaporation measuring vat, is measured by the equipment with the quantity of water necessary to compensate the original level. Precipitation on the other hand is measured with that quantity of water which needs to be let out in order to restore the original water level of the vat. The high accuracy can be obtained on the one hand by adjusting deliberately small feeding resp. lower quantities. On the other hand the sensing unit of the equipment watches the water level of the evaporation measuring vat with high accuracy, and controls the supply and lower units respectively when the level varies due to either evaporation or precipitation. The electronic circuit of the equipment counts separately the quantities dosed and lowered respectively, and leads said information e.g. to a recording instrument.

    • The present invention provides an improvement by adaptation of a rising stem fuel oil gauge for indicating, at a remote location, the quantity of fuel in oil storage tanks commonly used in homes and businesses. The improvement includes a magnet carried on a horizontally positioned level indicating disc, which is attached to the upper end of a vertically rising stem and enclosed within a transparent tube. Markings on the tube correspond to the quantity of fuel oil within the storage tank and the alignment of the indicating disc with a specific marking indicates the fuel oil quantity at any given time. A magnetically actuated reed switch is mounted to the exterior of the tube at a predetermined position, and a power supply and remote alarm are coupled to the switch. When the level of the indicating disc is near the position at which the switch is mounted, the magnet carried on the disc actuates the switch which in turn actuates the remote alarm. The system thus provides an alarm when the quantity of fuel within the storage tank corresponds to that predetermined quantity corresponding to the level at which the magnetic switch is mounted on the tube.
