    • A heavy-duty pivot plate adjusting joint for railroad freight cars connects multi-part car sections. To this end, the adjusting joint is configured such that each drawbar end is provided with only one end coupling rod part having a spring column, and the drawbar is connected by way of the drawbar end plates to the support bearing plates of an under frame provided on a car side. Each adjusting joint is provided with an adjusting point pivot plate, wherein a pivot plate roll surface is present directly at the pivot plate or at the adjoining contact surfaces transmitting pressure force, the surfaces having a spherical or two-dimensional shape. A configuration of the adjusting joints in a “regular embodiment” is proposed, wherein the distance of the transmission end points of balance is smaller than the distance of the spring travel limiters.

    • A railcar draft gear spring assembly including an axial stack of spring units. Each spring unit is formed from a non-circular elastomeric preform having a series of spaced corners with recessed sides extending between the corners. The preform includes a lobe formed at each corner for channeling the flow of elastomer when the preform is compressed between a pair of non-circular metal plates. Each plate has an outer profile and a series of grippers extending in a common direction away from one surface of the plate. The grippers are arranged in a predetermined pattern relative to each other and relative to the preform for initially positioning the non-circular preformed block of copolyester elastomer relative to the plates and for thereafter restricting the flow of elastomer relative to the outer profile of the plates.

    • During manufacture of the draft gear and before it is inserted into the railway car, the piston is positioned in the cylinder in a preshortened position. Part of the fill of flowable, normally solid material is inserted into the cylinder about the piston rod to hold the piston in the preshortened position and the remainder of the fill is inserted between the piston and the closed end of the cylinder. The part of the fill inserted about the piston rod may be in the form of a collar or in the form of particulate material introduced through a port radially opposite the piston rod. This holds the piston in the preshortened position so that the draft gear can easily be inserted into the railway car. After the railway car is put into service the part of the fill about the piston rod breaks down and the piston returns to its normal operating position.
