Reduced wear between the spring basket and the coupler carrier is obtained.

    • A coupler carrier arrangement for railroad cars, in which the car center sill ends are equipped with a striker casting through which the car coupler shank extends for connection to the car center sill, with the striker casting having the familiar cage, in which the coupler carrier is mounted, including an upwardly opening socket on the underside of the casting defining a coupler carrier chamber, in which the coupler carrier itself comprises a body formed from an ultra high molecular weight polymer of dry self lubricating characteristics that replaces both the conventional coupler carrier and the carrier iron, and is shaped to define a horizontally disposed upwardly facing load support surface on which the coupler shank rests, and oppositely facing forward and rearward side walls defining vertically disposed slide surfaces formed for close fitting relation to the coupler carrier chamber inner and outer walls. The coupler carrier load support and side slide surfaces are of integral one piece construction, and are characterized by effecting resurfacing of the coupler shank and striker casting surfaces they engage to make such surfaces effectively resistant against wear.

    • Ends of two adjacent railroad cars may be joined by an articulating device when a series of such cars comprises a semi-permanent unit. The articulating device includes a male member which is connected to a sill of the first car and a female member connected to a like sill of the second car. Each connecting member has an inner end portion disposed within the respective sill. The structure of the inner end portion allows it to be joined to the sill by a select pattern of welds. These welds join the connecting member to the sill to form a connection therebetween which may withstand the high static and dynamic forces transmitted from the railroad cars to the articulating device during travel of the unit.

Polymeric material is attached to the support and is supported by the continuous supporting surface thereof whereby the polymeric material has an outer antifriction wear surface. A comparatively rigid load-carrying member is embedded in the polymeric material and the load-carrying member serves to maintain the polymeric material free of substantial indentation under conditions of high impact loads applied simultaneously against the load-carrying member and the polymeric material, the load-carrying member having a peripheral side surface being engaged by the polymeric material completely around the entire peripheral side surface so that the load-carrying member is completely surrounded at the peripheral side surface thereof by the polymeric material.
