    • A supply vessel containing a molten bath has a discharge opening which is controlled by a valve. The discharge opening is located in a vertical plane and has a horizontal axis. The valve includes a set of valve plates having through openings for the passage of molten material. The valve plates are rotatable relative to one another in order to bring the through openings into and out of register and thus open and close the valve. One of the valve plates sits adjacent the discharge opening and is stationary while another of the valve plates is remote from the discharge opening and is freely rotatable. A mold having an inlet, a casting cavity and feeders between the inlet and casting cavity is brought into engagement with the freely rotatable valve plate. The mold is positioned with the casting cavity below the upper surface of the molten bath and with the feeders below the casting cavity. The valve is opened and the casting cavity filled with molten material via the mold inlet and the feeders. When the casting cavity is full, the mold is rotated on the horizontal axis of the discharge opening in order to bring the feeders above the casting cavity. The freely rotatable valve plate rotates with the mold so that the valve remains open during rotation of the mold. The valve is closed after the molten material in the casting cavity has solidified. The mold is removed from the supply vessel once the entire contents of the mold are solid.

A control valve assembly is mounted on a fixed support and has an inlet orifice connected to an air pressure supply and two outlet orifices, one connected to the metering rod actuator and the other to an exhaust. A blade is connected to the float and is adpated to be moved by it closer or further away from the exhaust orifice so as to control the air exhausted at the outlet orifice of the control valve in proportion to the spacing between the blade and exhaust orifice, resulting in variation in the air pressure at the outlet connected to the metering rod actuator depending upon the float and blade positions.

    • A regulating device for regulating the flow of molten metal from metallurgical vessel includes an inner tubular part which is fixed to the metallurgical vessel and defines at least one through-hole, and a movable outer tubular part rotatably and/or slidably mounted to the metallurgical vessel and extending around the tubular inner part. The tubular outer part terminates at a bottom edge constituted by a contiguous land extending around the tubular inner part. The tubular outer part can be slid and/or rotated between open and closed positions at which the through-hole of the tubular inner part is opened and closed, respectively. To prevent plugs of molten metal from hardening in the at least one through-hole of the tubular inner part, the bottom edge of the tubular outer part is designed so that a portion of the land thereof passes across the at least one through-hole when the tubular outer part is moved between the open and closed position. More specifically, at the closed position, a portion of the land constituting the bottom edge is located to one side of the through-hole with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular inner part while, at the open position a portion of the land constituting the bottom edge is located to the other side of the through-hole with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular inner part.

    • An apparatus mounts a casting pipe having therethrough a discharge opening to an outlet of a metallurgical vessel to enable discharge of molten metal from the vessel through an opening of the outlet and through the discharge opening of the casting pipe. The apparatus includes a support member supporting at least one casting pipe. The support member is mounted adjacent the outlet of the vessel. A closing member is mounted on the support member in a manner such that a closing surface of the closing member extends laterally of an end surface of the casting pipe. The support member, and thus the casting pipe and closing member, are adjustably movable relative to the outlet in first opposite directions parallel to a longitudinal axis of the outlet opening and in second opposite directions transverse to the first opposite directions and transverse to the longitudinal axis.

    • An elongated nozzle assembly for closing and/or regulating the discharge from a metallurgical vessel of molten metal in the form of a wide strip includes refractory tubular stator and rotor members each having extending through a tubular wall thereof a discharge opening in the form of a slot elongated in the direction of coincident longitudinal axes thereof. The stator and rotor members are assembled with one member fitting in a sealing manner within the other member, thus forming inner and outer members. The inner member has therein a cavity elongated in the direction of the axes of the members and into which opens the discharge opening of the inner member. A first longitudinal end of the cavity is closed by an end wall of the inner member. A second longitudinal end of the cavity is opened axially through an inlet opening in the respective longitudinal end of the inner member. The inlet opening communicates via the cavity with the discharge opening of the inner member.

    • A rotary valve for controlling the discharge of molten metal in a substantially downward direction from a metallurgical vessel includes a refractory rotor rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis. The rotor has an outer peripheral surface, either conical or cylindrical, arranged symmetrically about the axis, and the rotor has therethrough a flow channel having inlet and outlet ports, at least the outlet port opening onto the outer surface. A refractory stator has therein a recess defined by an inner surface, either conical or cylindrical, complementary to the outer surface of the rotor, the stator having therethrough a discharge channel. The rotor fits within the recess in the stator, with the outer and inner surfaces thereof being complementarily positioned symmetrically about the axis. The stator and rotor are arranged in the region of the metal melt in the interior of a metallurgical vessel in and/or on the refractory lining of a side wall of the vessel and/or the refractory lining of the bottom of the vessel.
