    • The process for preparing a resin-coated casting sand by coating sand grains with a binder comprising a liquid phenolic resin component and a polyisocyanate component, the improvement of which comprises coating sand grains with an organic solvent prior to coating of the sand grains with the binder, thereby prolonging the bench life of the resulting resin-coated casting sand and enhancing the strength of a casting mold prepared from this resin-coated casting sand. Furthermore, this process enables the utilization of sand of a low grade or reclaimed sand having a high alkaline component content, that has not been used in the conventional process, and the supply of an excellent resin-coated casting sand which is capable of providing a casting mold having a high strength and has a long bench life.

    • A mold for casting molten reactive and refractory metals has a facing portion comprising finely divided particles of the fluorides and oxyfluorides of the metals of Groups, Ia, IIa, and IIIa, including the lanthanide and actinide series, of the Periodic Chart (after Mendeleeff) and a back-up portion comprising finely divided particles of shell mold back-up material. The fluoride and oxyfluoride content of the facing portion is essentially inert to titanium and other reactive and refractory molten metals and hence minimizes contamination by mold degradation products of metal objects cast in the mold. SPThis is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 448, 254, filed Mar. 5, 1974, now abandoned; the same being a continuation of application Ser. No. 332,608, filed Feb. 15, 1973, now abandoned; which in turn is a continuation of application Ser. No. 174,662 filed Aug. 25, 1971, now abandoned.

    • The invention relates to a method of fixing a shaped body of a refractory material to an interior face (e.g. of a wall) of an ingot mould in which an adhesive composition is applied to either the body or the face or both and the body and the face are urged together, the thus fixed body serving to identify an ingot when cast in the mould. In the method of the invention the adhesive composition is a mixture consisting essentially of aqueous alkali metal silicate such as sodium silicate and a particulate refractory material such as china clay, silica or zircon, the mixture having a viscosity of at least 2000 poises measured on a Brookfield Viscometer model RVT at 20.degree. C.
