    • A method is provided for coding images and originals, for example, for telefax and color television. The method saves hardware and allows the transmission time of information to be shortened, particularly for black and white digital or numeric longitudinal coding. According to the method of the present invention, the same code words are assigned for black and white run-lengths. As discriminating criterion, the input sequence of black and white is used. During coding of several successive white lines, the transmission time can be further shortened by providing the coded number of white lines before or after the code word for the white line. During gray coding, transmission time can further be reduced by subdividing the gray scales or binary code words with deliberate redundancy, if necessary, since in this case many characters occur successively and can be transmitted in the same way as the white lines. During color image transmission, transmission time is further reduced by code multiplexing and, if necessary, by QAM-based transmission, whereas in addition the PAM-coded information is D.C. biased. The sum alternating current thus varies in phases in the range of 90 degrees only.

    • A post-processing filter apparatus for use in an image signal decoding system, capable of improving the image quality of the system, comprises a memory for storing decoded image data of a current frame; a controller for assigning each pixel value included in the stored decoded image data as a target pixel value in sequence, the target pixel value representing the value of a target pixel to be filtered, and for producing information representing the position of the target pixel; a pixel region determinator for generating a selection signal representing whether or not the target pixel belongs to a boundary region of a block in the stored decoded image data by using the position information of the target pixel, wherein the boundary region denotes a region which includes pixels placed along the boundary of the block; a filtering device for selectively filtering the target pixel value in response to the selection signal to thereby produce a filtered target pixel value; a updating circuit for updating the target pixel value with the filtered target pixel value; and a circuit for retrieving the updated pixel value when all of the pixels contained in the decoded image data have been updated.

    • An image signal analyzing system capable of accomplishing shape analysis for processing or coding an image with easy, by space division using two orthogonal representative vectors, or by differential representative vectors given by the difference between representative vectors. With such a system, inner products between mean separated blocks produced by a mean separated unit and a differential representative vector set stored in a memory in advance are computed by inner product computing unit disposed into a binary tree shape having n stages. Positive/negative signs expressing resulting inner products in the respective stages of the binary tree computed by the inner product computing unit are held, as indexes, by n index holding means sequentially, and an index representing the shape of input image information is obtained from the n indexes held by the index holding unit.
