    • A method of and apparatus for determining during an initial training period the initial values of the coefficients of a transversal equalizer in a data transmission system in which the transmission channel creates frequency shift. The received periodic training sequence is modulated by a time-domain window signal whose Fourier transform exhibits a relatively flat central peak and has comparatively low values in the vicinity of those frequencies which are a multiple of the inverse of the period of the transmitted sequence, and the discrete Fourier transform W.sub.k of the modulated signal is computed. The values of the coefficients of the equalizer are obtained by computing the inverse discrete Fourier transform of the ratio F.sub.k =Z.sub.k /W.sub.k, where Z.sub.k is the discrete Fourier transform of the transmitted sequence.

    • A single channel carrier system is disclosed in which carrier techniques are used to add a second private talking path on a normal telephone subscriber loop. A central office unit modulates the second subscriber's signal to an inaudible range while the remote subscriber's unit demodulates this signal to recover the voice signal. The same process is used in the opposite direction utilizing a different carrier frequency.Each unit includes a carrier receiver having automatic gain control circuits and a variable attenuation circuit. The automatic gain control circuit includes a direct current clamp to minimize excursions of the AGC signal in the absence of a received carrier. The variable attenuation circuit uses a diode bridge shunting the signal path and controlled by the AGC signal. A linear carrier oscillator is implemented by providing a constant current source of oscillation energy.

    • Apparatus for accomplishing amplitude equalization between two input signals includes circuitry for generating the sum and the difference of the two signals, mixing the sum and the difference and applying the low-pass filtered version of the mixed resultant as a feedback error signal of very low frequency to an attenuator associated with one of the two input signals. A hybrid combiner may be used to generate the sum and the difference from the two input signals. The phases of the two input signals are unaffected by the amplitude equalization. A particular application of the invention is in a LIND (linear amplification using nonlinear devices) amplifier such as that disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,777,275 issued Dec. 4, 1973 to D. C. Cox.

    • A transmitter transmits data through a communication channel to a receiver and the communication channel provides the data with delay and attenuation distortion. The receiver includes an equalization network having taps with multiplying coefficients for correcting the delay and attenuation distortion of the data. In response to a special sequence of the data, either specially generated by the transmitter or detected in random data, the receiver generates signals for updating the multiplying coefficients of the taps and these signals are introduced to the equalization network through a gate enabled by a special sequence detection network. This apparatus provides for the adjustment of the equalization taps in an extremely short period of time such as 5.83 milliseconds.
