    • A chain formed of links made of fiber-reinforced resin composite material. Each link has a terminal loop located at each axial end of a long strap. Loops, located at adjacent ends of successive links, are joined by relatively short connecting links that overlap bushings located within each of the loops. The bushings and connecting links are held in position at each lateral side of the links by pins and washers. A ring surrounds each link where the strap flares to form each terminal loop. The loops may be unitary or spaced laterally to receive within the space a unitary loop of an adjoining link aligned axially with the other loop. A pin located within the loops supports washers at each lateral side of the links to maintain the position of the links and to transfer load between the links.

    • An overload detection and safety arrangement for a load carrying link chain, including a fuse link having link plates connected by a fuse bar of a tensile strength less than the tensile strength of the remainder of the load carrying chain, the fuse link being laced into the remainder of the chain. The fuse bar is designed to break under predetermined overload conditions, but is positioned and arranged to carry normal tensile loads on the device. A safety link, offset from but substantially parallel to the line of tension through the fuse bar, connects the link plates. The safety link has a tensile strength greater than the tensile strength of the fuse bar and at least substantially equal to the tensile strength of the remainder of the chain, the safety link holding the load when the fuse bar breaks due to overload conditions.

    • An improved jewelry chain loop element and method of assembly into single, double, triple, etc., chains in which the links are formed from soldered wire rings. One segment of each ring is crimped together so that the ring is formed into an approximate teardrop shape with one end having parallel wires and the other a loop. The loop may be flattened. Then an ornament, such as a bead, tube bezel, cup bezel or other ornament is formed or secured on the crimped end to form a combined fastening means and tip ornament. The crimped segment is bent upward at a 15-60 degree angle either before or after the bead or ornament is formed. The individual links are then assembled into the chain by placing the ornament of one link through the remaining loop of the next adjacent link and the loop crimped about the adjacent link's ornament. Alternatively, teardrop-shaped links may be cast as single links or as tandem (double, triple, etc.) links. A number of completed chains or single teardrop link elements may be connected (e.g., by soldering) parallel to each other at adjacent loops thereby forming a double, triple, etc. chain of greater width. A second ornament may be secured intermediate the tip ornament and the loop.

    • A chain particularly useful for draglines in various type strip mining operations is disclosed. The chain is made up of individual, separately assembled links of generally a U-shape having spaced pin lugs at one end. The lugs have aligned pin eyes for holding a pin between them, which is received generally flush with the outside surfaces of the lugs. To prevent pin rotation and to prevent oblong wear in the pin eyes, the pin and the eyes have a flat surface on the side toward the open end of the U-shaped link. With the pin installed in the eyes, a roll pin is press fit through one lug and through that end of the pin to retain the link pin in place. Openings in the lug are oblong shaped, so that some forward and backward movement of the link pin is permitted and the roll pin is never put in a shear situation. The link units are assembled at 90.degree. to one another, with a pin of one link passing through the next link. The body of the link may be of a more wear-resistant material than the pin so that the easily replaceable pin wears out first.
