    • The invention relates to an apparatus for the contactless guidance of webs of material 1. The apparatus has at least two blow nozzles 2, 3, designed as slits or rows of holes, arranged one behind the other in running direction of the web of material 1 and extending transversely to it. The blow jets of these blow nozzles 2, 3 are directed in the same direction and obliquely against the web of meterial 1. On the side towards the web of material 1, flow baffles 12, 12a, 12b, 13 are provided, of which the flow baffle 12 adjoining the rear blow nozzle 2 in running direction of the web of material 1 is curved convexly toward the web of material 1. The flow baffle 12a, 12b between the convexly curved flow baffle 12 and the front blow nozzle 3 is designed as a shock diffuser. With such an apparatus, a web of material 1 is guided free from fluttering even under difficult circumstances. This effect is further improved if the flow baffle 13 adjoining the front nozzle lip 8 of the front blow nozzle 3 is curved convexly toward the web of material 1.

    • In a calendering apparatus for hot-calendering a paper web, the apparatus includes a rotatable calendering roll defining a smooth calendering surface. A backing roll rotatably cooperates with the calendering roll for defining therebetween a calendering nip for the passage therethrough of the web. An induction heater is disposed in close proximity to the calendering surface nip for inducing eddy currents within the calendering roll such that the calendering roll is heated. A blow box is disposed in close proximity to the calendering surface and between the heater and the nip. The blow box defines a plurality of compartments which are disposed in a cross-machine direction. Each of the compartments selectively blows a current of cooling air against the calendering surface for controlling the temperature of the calendering surface so that the temperature of the calendering surface adjacent to the nip is controlled in a cross-machine direction.

    • Disclosed is an apparatus and method for providing a shower of fog onto a web or a machine component in contact with a web or for applying a layer of moisture to a web. The fog, which as a temperature lower than the temperature of the surface of the web or the machine component to be cooled, is applied to the surface and is caused to evaporate by the difference in the temperatures. A supply of dry air is supplied to transport the evaporated fog from the region adjacent the surface to be cooled. Fog may be generated through the use of an air-atomizing nozzle which propels water and compressed air through a small orifice under pressure to create an atomized mist or fog. To achieve localized control of the application of fog, a plurality of air atomizing nozzles is mounted in a row extending in the cross machine direction of the apparatus. An air plenum extending parallel to the row of air atomizing nozzles is mounted on at least one side of the row. Each air plenum includes a slot that directs an air curtain toward the mist flow from the nozzle to restrict the flow to a uniformly dimensioned area.

    • Method and apparatus for uniformly drying a web to obtain a desired moisture content within a predetermined tolerance. A matrix of emitters arranged in m rows and n columns (where m,n.gtoreq.2) are operated at either low or high flame conditions. At least one emitter in each column is operated in a duty cycle fashion wherein the said emitter is maintained at the high flame condition for a predetermined portion of the duty cycle and at the low flame condition for the remainder of the duty cycle as a function of the amount of drying desired. This technique yields a finer adjustment than is capable in conventional systems. The high flame condition is selected to operate the emitters at a radiant energy whose wavelength optimizes the drying capability. Air circulators enhance the drying operation and protects the system from damage. Sprayers spray the emitters to prevent damage due to overheating when a web break occurs.

    • A method is employed in a press section of a paper machine for changing a pick-up and/or press fabric, the substantial run of which when the fabric is in its normal operating position, passes above a group of nip defining press rollers. Insert members of the machine frame are removed to define gaps therewithin and the press nip or nips through which the fabric passes are open. In the method, upper guide rollers situated within and guiding the loop of the fabric are shifted from an upper operating position occupied thereby when the fabric is in its normal operating position to a lower position and the fabric to be changed is transported with the same being wound in double manner on a changing pole. The fabric is opened and spread out to define a loop which encircles all of the press and guide rollers which will be situated within the fabric loop when the fabric is in its normal operating position. The loop so formed and transported is passed into the machine frame through the gaps defined therein by the removal of the insert members therefrom and into the open press nips. The fabric situated within the machine frame is spread out from the changing pole while the upper guide rollers are shifted from the lower position back to their upper operating position, whereupon the insert members are replaced in the machine frame and the opened press nips are closed.
