    • Disclosed are oil-in-water emulsions containing an aqueous polysaccharide-containing continuous phase, an emulsified oleaginous liquid, and an oligosaccharide mixture composed of sugar units selected from the group consisting of arabinose, mannose, galactose, glucose, xylose, and mixtures thereof, and which consists primarily of pentosans and hexosans containing from one to ten sugar units. The emulsions preferably also contain an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, preferably lime. The emulsions may also contain aphrons. Also disclosed is a method of increasing the low shear rate viscosity of aqueous polysaccharide-containing fluids which comprise incorporating into the fluids an oligosaccharide mixture, an oleaginous liquid, and optionally, an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide.

The inverted drilling fluids according to the invention are characterized in that they contain surface-active di-salts of the type indicated as emulsifier or as an emulsifier component together with an ecologically compatible continuous oil phase.

    • Described is the use of oleophilic monomeric and/or oligomeric diesters of carbonic acid with the same or different oil-soluble and ecologically compatible mono-functional and optionally polyfunctional alcohols as a component of oil-based or water-based drilling fluids and other fluid drill-hole treatment agents. The invention in one embodiment comprises oil-based fluids, and particularly inverted fluids of the W/O type, which in the continuous phase at least in part contain oleophilic carbonic acid diesters. In a further important embodiment the invention relates to water-based emulsion fluids which in the dispersed oil phase at least in part contain said oleophilic carbonic acid diesters. The invention further comprises drill-hole treatment agents, and especially drilling fluids of the above-mentioned types, the continuous or dispersed oil phases of which, respectively, consist of oleophilic carbonic acid disasters or contain said ester type in admixture with other ecologically compatible oil mixing components. Preferred mixing components for a use in combination which the carbonic acid diesters are appropriate carboxylic acid ester oils, oleophilic alcohols and/or oleophilic ethers.

    • A self-breaking, foamed, oil-in-water emulsion contains a water-immiscible organic solvent for paraffins and asphaltenes, an aqueous nonformation-damaging component, an inert gas, and surface active agents selected to promote a stable foamed emulsion despite contact of the treating fluid with the hydrocarbon and aqueous environment in the reservoir. Under conditions of agitation, the treating fluid is a stable foamed emulsion which undergoes spontaneous breakdown into two liquid phases under quiescent conditions. The treating fluid is injected and/or circulated as a stable foamed emulsion to dissolve paraffin and asphaltene-containing deposits from various substrata, such as a subterranean reservoir penetrated by a well, the well itself, or an industrial vessel or conduit. When injection or circulation is stopped, the foamed emulsion spontaneously breaks down so that the treating fluid can be readily pumped from the well.
