    • A process for the continuous production of a thermoplastic aromatic polycarbonate is disclosed. Accordingly, in a reactor system which includes a tube reactor and a tank equipped with a stirrer, there are reacted a preheated dialkali diphenolate aqueous solution with gaseous phosgene in CH.sub.2 Cl.sub.2 and/or in chlorobenzene solution containing excess phosgene, in a mixer to form a mixed emulsion. The emulsion is then transported at least partly against the force of gravity into the tube reactor to facilitate a polycondensation reaction and in which after a residence time of at least 10 seconds and without dissipation of the heat of reaction there is added a chain terminator. The heat of reaction is dissipated in said tank and aqueous sodium hydroxide and catalyst are added to complete the reaction. The process according to the invention leads to high yields of phosgene.

    • The present invention is directed to a continuous process which removes the 1 to 3% cyclic oligomers formed in the polycarbonate process and after hydrolysis of the oligomers recycles the resulting monomer for use in the reaction forming the polycarbonates. To remove the cyclic oligomers to a level so as to produce an improved polycarbonate product and to recover the oligomers in an economical manner for recycling in a continuous process, the selection of a solvent is unique and essential to achieve the continuous process. The solvent for the cyclic oligomers must be immiscible with water, must not react with an alkali and have a cohesive energy density of less than 90.

    • This invention relates to an improved interfacial polycondensation aromatic polycarbonate process which does not require large quantities of strong base to provide a particulate product. The process is specific to interfacial polycondensation processes wherein the polycarbonate is formed in the aqueous phase by using a low organic to aqueous phase volume ratio. The quantity of strong base required to provide a particular product is reduced by adding the aromatic dihydroxy compound to the reaction mixture in small increments. This maintains a high mole ratio of strong base to aromatic dihydroxy compound during reaction.
