    • The present invention relates to a railroad crossing (2). The railroad crossing (2) includes a railroad (4) along which a train can travel. The railroad crossing (2) further includes a road (6) extending across the railroad (4) and along which a vehicle or automobile can travel. The road (6) includes a curved approach (8) to the railroad (4). The curved approach (8) is effective in encouraging a reduction in speed of the vehicle without seriously disrupting vehicle traffic flow. The railroad crossing (2) further includes a movable vehicle impact barrier (10) which can prevent the vehicle from crossing the railroad (4). The road (6) may include two separated traffic lanes (16a, 16b) in which vehicles travel in opposite directions, and this separation of the lanes (16) deters the vehicle from being driven from one lane 16a and into the other lane (16b) in an attempt to circumvent the barrier (10).

    • Disclosed is a train proximity detector for detecting an RF carrier transmitted by a train, for a predefined period of time. Further, the encoded FSK data is decoded to determine if a match with a predefined data signature exists. If a match exists, visual and audio indications are provided to the operator, indicating a close proximity of a train. Modifications to train equipment can be made to cause the transmission of the carrier and FSK data on the activation of the train whistle, which is about 1500 feet from every crossing.

    • A railroad crossing traffic warning system for alerting a motorist approaching a railroad crossing to the presence of an oncoming train. The system comprises a series of magnetometer sensor probes buried in the right-of way adjacent to a railroad track at predetermined distances from the railroad crossing. These sensors provide a signal to a controller unit when the presence of a train is sensed. The controller unit first determines the speed at which the oncoming train is traveling and the time it will take for the train to reach the crossing and then activates an improved warning apparatus at a predetermined amount of time before the train reaches the crossing. The improved warning apparatus comprises an X-shaped railroad crossing warning sign or "crossbuck" having a plurality of light emitting diodes ("LED") or the like mounted on the across the center thereof, a plurality of strobe lights, and a train direction indicator comprising a plurality of lamps which are lighted sequentially to indicate the direction in which the oncoming train is traveling. The system may be powered by a rechargeable battery which may be recharged by a solar panel array allowing the system to be utilized at crossings located in rural areas where a source of AC electrical power is not readily available.

    • An improved flashing beacon strobe in which high intensity halogen gas filled gaseous discharge tubes are used as a light source. The gaseous tubes are strobed at a desired rate by a switched high voltage high current power source. Rotating cylindrical lenses with variously colored sections are placed coaxially upon each gaseous discharge tube. In one embodiment, two gaseous discharge tubes are each equipped with a rotating cylindrical lens and a V-shaped mirror is placed between the cylindrical lenses to prevent interference and increase dispersion. Dispersion is further enhanced by using fresnel type lens material. The cylindrical lenses are rotated synchronously, a system which includes an electrical motor, rotating pods and a timing chain which maintains a constant angular relationship between the cylindrical lenses.

    • An interlocking motor operated door and derailing device has a building protecting derailing apparatus that cannot be rendered ineffective while the door is closed.
